 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background research.
research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

● That fabric is: a cloth made by weaving, knitting, or felting fibres:

● That textile is: a type of cloth that’s been produced being woven, knitted, or by
felting.

● A
garment is any item of clothing this could be a shirt or pants for example

● That a s eam is: when two pieces of fabric are attached or sewed

● That a h
 em is: a
n edge made by folding back some cloth and sewing it to make a
neat and clean edge.

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

The material cotton itself is made by...
- Mixing and blowing
- Carding
- Silver lap former
- Combing
- Drawing
- Roving
- Spinning
- Winding
- Warping
- Sizing
- Drawing in
- Weaving
- Inspection/Folding
- Packing
- Product

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:
● Cotton textiles are made by w eaving, knitting, crocheting, knitting, tatting,
felting, or braiding using cotton threads or yarn

● Sewing/ stitching is one of the main methods of attaching fabrics to create

a garment of a textile. Another option is gluing or using attachable
techniques like buttons, velcro or snap-on’s.

CLIENT INFORMATION  By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be taken
into account when designing and creating my product:

I will be designing for myself this product is something I’ll like because it's
appropriate for me. It’s appropriate because this product is used to relax and
sleep, sleeping is not only an activity I enjoy but also and activity that is crucial
and important to one's well being and a sleeping mask is a product that can assist
and help with achieving further relaxation.

The group that I am targeting is mostly females from middle school or teenagers

I like pastel, soft and light-coloured objects
My favourite colour is also light pink. My aesthetic is very soft and relaxed.

This colour scheme is different shades of pink these shades vary from light to dark

This colour scheme is very light. These colours are all pastel

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):

● The skill of how to sew on a button. I did this by making a criss-cross stitch
through a button and securing it.

● The runover stitch, I did this by pulling the needle in and out like a dolphin in a
straight line.

● The O verstitch, I did this by pulling the needle over the edge of the fabric to
secure both sides together.

● The backstitch I did this by doing a runover stitch but pulling the needle as close
as possible to the last one in a straight line.

● The blanket stitch I did this by doing an overstitch and pulling the needle through
the loop before it gets completely pulled through the fabric.

● The french knot I did this by wrapping thread around a needle and pulling it
through the fabric to make a knot at the surface of the cloth.

● Tying a finishing knot I did this by making a loop with the thread and pulling the
end of the thread through, to make sure that your stitching doesn’t come undone
and stays in place.

The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● Cutting measurement: I’ll need to measure and cut the pieces that I’ll be using for
this eye mask
● Stitching: to attach pieces of fabric together. (The instructions use a sewing
machine but I think that any basic hand sewing styles will work)
● Hemming: I will have to fold some cloth in and sew it to make a clean and neat
edge
The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● Blanket Stitch my blanket stitches often end up looking messy
● Knots: I’m not really good at making knots on buttons and doing french knots
● Running and Back Stitch i have to work on making neater and straighter stitches
with correct space between stitches
