 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

● A piece of fabric is made by sewing or knitting together pieces of textiles
● A textile is a flexible type of cloth or woven fabric
● A garment is any type of clothing made from textiles and fabrics
● Fast fashion is when famous brands release a new, trendy piece of clothing, and
people come to buy it, and a few weeks or a month, another piece of clothing is
released, and people throw away their old clothing and buy the new one to keep
up with the trend.

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

● Cotton, a type of fabric, is made by deseeding a cotton plant, cleaning it, spinning
it and weaving it into the fabric to use.
● The basic joining methods are sewing, fusing, welding, adhesives, and molding.
For sewing, a piece of fabric is connected to another by threading a thin string
that firmly attaches both together strongly. Fusing is used by putting resin on two
or more pieces of fabric and putting heat and pressure on them to join them
properly. Welding is used by adding heat to a piece of fabric with thermoplastics,
which melts together and makes the two fabrics conjoined. Adhesives are used
by placing a thin adhesive film between two fabrics or more to join them as time
passes. Molding is the same as fusing, but it cannot join as many fabrics as
fusing.

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:
● A sewing pattern is made out of usually paper, so you can make edits to it
whenever you need it. A pattern will make a piece of fabric into any garment.
First, an original garment is needed. You will need to trace the seams with chalk
which will be later used. Second, you will place the garment on a pattern paper to
trace. Third, flatten the shirt on the paper. Fourth, trace the edges of the biggest
piece of the garment. Fifth, do the same with the smaller pieces of the garment.
Sixth, make space between the stitching line and the edge. Finally, cut it out.
● Materials include,
- Thread (polyester and cotton and waxed)
- Eyelets
- Studs
- Rivets
- Snap fasteners
- Velcro (sew-on and stick on)
- Anything you request that is approved by the teacher.
- Fabric glue
- Contact adhesive (Elmer’s multi-purpose spray adhesive)
- Sewing machine (Brother JA1450NT)
- Needles
- Seam ripper
- Fabric shears
- Rotary cutter
- Hole punch
- Rivet/eyelet setter and die

CLIENT INFORMATION  By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be
taken into account when designing and creating my product:
● I would design it for myself. I represent the school of CIS.
● I like soft, cotton shirts, and like simple, sporty style clothes. I like blue and
orange.

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
● How to braid, because before I didn’t know how to braid
● Running stitch, because I have not touched a needle before
● Blanket stitch, because I have not touched a needle before
● Sewing a button, because I didn’t know how to sew
The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● Blanket stitch, because I need to make round edges on my toy
● Overstitch, because I need to make round edges on my toy
● Backstitch, because it would make the toy look neater than a running stitch.
The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● Braiding, because I still mess up the braid sometimes
● Sewing a button, because the pattern is confusing
● Blanket stitch, because I sometimes forget to place the needle through the hole
after pushing through the fabric
● Overstitch, because I want to make sure that the spaces are even

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create a plush toy

The purpose of my product is for comforting myself and others

Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of -textiles being quickly sent to landfills- by
using upcycled articles of clothing

Intended   My product is intended to be used by myself and my family

Target audience

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as a student and a child

Their needs and wants for the product are wanting it to be soft and comfortable
