LESSON 4

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Question: What do you think Earth
would look like from space?
Answer: round, blue, brown and
green
What goes around the Sun?
• Planet is a huge object that moves
around the Sun.
• Solar System is made of planets,
moons, and Sun.
• Solar means “of the sun”.
• Sun is the center of the solar system.
It is the strongest and brightest part
of solar system.
• The Sun’s heat and light help people,
plants, animals to keep them warm
and dry.
• Plants needs sunlight in order to grow.
The Solar System
Planet Orbit Time
Mercury 88 days

Venus 225 days

Earth 365 days

Mars 687 days

Jupiter 12 years

Saturn 29 years

Uranus 84 years

Neptune 165 years

Question #1: Which Planet has the largest
orbit?
Answer: Neptune
Question #2: Why does it take Saturn a
longer time to orbit the Sun than Earth?
Answer: Saturn is farther away from the Sun
than Earth.
Question #3: How are the planets in the
solar system the same?
Answer: They all orbit the Sun.
MAIN IDEA
• The Solar System has eight planets
orbiting the Sun at the Center.
What are the planets like?
• Each planet in our solar system is
different. Look at the pictures and read
the captions to learn about each planet.
Inner Planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars
Outer Planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune
INNER PLANETS
Mercury is the
closest planet to
the Sun. It is
rocky like our
Moon.

Venus is the
hottest planet.
Thick clouds trap
the Sun’s heat.
INNER PLANETS

Earth has water

and air. It has one
moon.

Mars has two

moons. It has a
red, rocky
surface.
OUTER PLANETS
Jupiter is the
largest planet. It
has at least 63
moons.

Saturn has large

rings around it. The
rings are made of
ice and rocks. It has
at least 47 moons.
OUTER PLANETS
Uranus has thin
rings around it. It
has at least 27
moons.

Neptune is a blue
planet. It has at
least 13 moons.
Question #1: How many planets have
more than one moon?
Answer: five: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune
Question #2: How are Saturn and Uranus
different?
Answer: Saturn has large rings and
Uranus has thin rings. Saturn has more
moon than Uranus.
MAIN IDEA
• All eight planets in our solar system
orbit the Sun, but each planet is quiet
different and unique.
