PLANETS IN THE
SOLAR SYSTEM
This time, you will learn the different
planets in the solar system and their
unique characteristics. Planets are
always moving. At present, there are
eight (8) planets in the solar system.
All these planets move constantly
around the Sun at different rates or
speed. Planets rotate on their own
axis as they revolve around the Sun.
Planets have no light of their own and
that they only reflect light from the
Sun.
The planets in our solar system are divided into
two (2) groups. These are the inner planets and
the outer planets. The inner planets are the four
planets closer to the Sun. The outer planets are
those farther from the Sun. The inner planets
include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These
inner planets are also called terrestrial planets,
because like Earth, these planets have rocky
surface. Meanwhile, the outer planets include
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These
outer planets are also called jovian planets
because like Jupiter, these planets are large and
gaseous. (Jovian derive from the name Jove
which is another name for the Roman god
Jupiter).
MERCURY
nearest planet to the Sun
has no moon or ring
around it
it takes 88 Earth days for
Mercury to complete its
revolution and 59 Earth
days to complete its
rotation.
VENUS
has almost the same size
and density as the Earth
Atmosphere is made up
mostly of carbon dioxide
like Mercury, it has no
moon or ring around it.
EARTH
only planet in the solar
system that can sustain
life.
land part is divided into
continents
has only one (1) moon
that revolves around
Earth every 27.3 days.
MARS
called the red planet
because of the presence
of iron on its surface that
looks red.
Mars has two (2) moons.
it takes 687 Earth days
to complete its
revolution and 24 days to
complete its rotation.
JUPITER
the biggest planet in the solar
system.
Jupiter has fifty (50) moons with an
additional of 17 moons recently
discovered and currently being
confirmed.
Jupiter’s moon named Ganymede
is the largest moon in the solar
system.
SATURN
a gas giant with no solid surface.
the atmosphere is composed
mostly of hydrogen and helium.
there are fifty-three (53) known
moons surrounding Saturn with
Titan as its largest moon which is
also the second (2nd) largest moon
in the solar system.
URANUS
the first planet discovered by
means of telescope.
• a planet that has eleven (11)
rings around and also has twenty-
seven (27) moons with Titania as
the largest moon.
it takes seventeen (17) hours to
complete its rotation and 84 Earth
years complete the revolution.
NEPTUNE
Neptune and Uranus are called
twin planets because they have
about the same size and mass.
Neptune has six dark rings made
up of very fine particles.
it has thirteen (13) moons, the
largest of which is called Triton.

PRESENTATION
LEARNING TASK 1 - Using the given information
about the eight planets from the presented video,
draw an illustration of it on your activity sheets.
Arrange the planets from their distance to the sun.
Name all the planets according to the distance from
the Sun.
Learning Task 2: Compare the two groups of planets
by using Venn diagram in comparing them.
Learning Task 3: Choose the phrase inside
the box that appropriately describes the
four inner planets. Write the answers on
your answer sheet.
red planet nearest planet to the sun revolves 365 ¼ days
has a thin atmosphere has a perfect sphere shape has 1 moon
only planet to sustain life has 2 moons has living and non-living things
Remember: The planets differ in
many characteristics such as its
average temperature and
distance from the Sun. they also
differ in sizes, mass, rate of
rotation and revolution, and
number of ring and moon.
What are the planets in the solar
system?
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune .
