Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 3

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson at least 80% of the pupils should be able to:
a. Identify the symmetry and line symmetry in a given shape, object or figure and real world examples.
b. Demonstrate cooperation in doing the group activity;
c. Complete the missing half of a symmetrical object by applying their understanding of symmetry.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: SYMMETRY
References: Mathematics, Kagamitan ng Mag-Aaral, Tagalog Simtri pp.264-267
Materials: laptop, powerpoint, pictures, cut-outs, flashcards, visual aids
Values: Cooperation and Appreciation

III. Procedures:
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Let’s have a drill! Class, do you still know
how to multiply? I will show you some flashcards about Yes, Teacher
multiplication. If you know the answer just raise your right
hand and I will call your name to answer.
Are you ready? Yes, Teacher
( Show flashcards )
4X3= 12

5X2= 10

7X4= 24

6X5= 30

2. Review
Class, do you still remember what are parallel,
Intersecting, and perpendicular? Yes, we are Teacher.

Now, I prepared a game titled “You Raised Me

Up”. I will group you into three. Each group will be given a
brown envelope containing the names: parallel,
intersecting, and perpendicular. I will show on the board
the different kinds of lines and identify the kinds of lines
and identify them by picking the answer inside the
envelope. From the title itself “ You Raised Me Up”, you
will raise your answer after showing the figure. Since you
are working as a group, what will you do? Work as a group, share your ideas and work
cooperatively.
Yes, that’s right! Is that important in working? Yes, Teacher!

Very good! Let’s start the game.

Are you ready class? Yes, we are ready Teacher!

B. Developmental Activities

1. Motivation
Before we start, I will introduce to you
my friend. Do you want to meet my friend? Yes, Teacher.

My Friend name is SpongeBob! Do you know

SpongeBob? Yes, Teacher.

He is a very good friend. Say Hi to him. Hi SpongeBob! Nice to meet You.

He is here because He needs our help. He needs to
find the half of his figures so that he can put them to his
house. Do you want to help him? Yes, Teacher.

To help him I need volunteers. We will call this

“Where is my other Half?” Volunteers will get one cut
figure in the box and look for the other half of it. First two
pairs who will finish the game will have a prize. Do you
want a prize? Yes, Teacher.

You are given 10 seconds to find your partner. Time

will start now! (Pupils will look for the half of their figure. )

Who won the game? ( will say the pairs won )

What did you do to find the half of your figure? (give their own answer)

What are the figures? The figures are chair, heart, star, shirt, cup etc. Teacher.

That’s right! What figure was more challenging to find? ( pupils own opinion )

-SpongeBob is very happy and glad because you help him

to find the halves of his figures.

Now, class do you have any idea about our lesson for
today? Yes, Teacher.

And what is it?

( If no one can guest the answer show puzzled letters Teacher, its all about SYMMETRY.
“YTREMMSY )

Very good! Our topic for today is all about symmetry. ( Give their own meaning )
So, from SpongeBob, what is symmetry? Symmetry - when one half of a figure looks like the mirror
image of the other half.
Very good! Let’s give him/her an angel clap!
( will do angel clap )
When one half of a figure looks like the mirror image of
the other half, it is symmetry.

2. Presentation
Here is a story problem. Read and analyze.
( Pupils will read the story problem )
Trina is a grade 3 pupil. She has a homework to study
about the different figures dividing it exactly into halves.
She tried to put lines into different ways to find the exact
halves of those figures. Look how she put the lines.
( showing different figures where Trina tried to put some
broken lines)

3. Discussion

What are figures in the story problem? Teacher, butterfly, bear, sun, flower, sunglasses, crab
and letter E.

What do you notice to all of the figures? Teacher, there are lines in every figures.
What do you call to the line or imaginary line that Teacher, it is called LINE OF SYMMETRY.
divides a figure into two equal parts?
(Clue: Show scramble letters to form the answer )

Very good!

Showing first figure.

What do you call to the line of symmetry that goes up Vertical line of symmetry.
and down. It is called ____________.

* (show some examples of vertical line of symmetry and ( pupils will answer )
tell me if it is symmetry or divided exactly into two or not)

Showing figure 2.

C C
Class, to find the exact half of this letter where are you (Pupils will draw line)
going to draw a line?
( ask someone to draw broken line )

Then class, what do you call to the line that goes left to
right and right to left? Horizontal line of symmetry.

* ( Give your own examples that you can divide into

horizontal line.)

Great!.

Showing another figure

Ask: Class, what is this figure? Teacher, that is a tree.

Is this figure shows exactly divided into two? No, Teacher.

Very good! This figures show that it is not exactly

divided and we cannot divide it into equally or exact sizes.

Is this figure symmetry or not symmetry? Teacher, not symmetry.

(show some examples and ask the pupils to answer if

the figure shows exactly divided (Symmetry) or not exactly
divided. ) ( pupils will answer )

Very good, Class!

Do you know now what is a symmetry? Yes, Teacher.

Very Good Class!

4. Generalization

Class, what is a symmetry? ( different ideas of pupils )

Symmetry - when one half of a figure looks like the
mirror image of the other half. * Figures that can be
divided into 2 equal and identical parts

What do you call to the line of symmetry that goes up Vertical line of symmetry.
and down?
Horizontal line of symmetry.
How about the line that goes left to right and right to
left?
If the object/figure is exactly divided into two is it
symmetry or not symmetry? Symmetry, Teacher.

If an object or a figure is not exactly divided, can you

call it as symmetry? No, Teacher.

5. Application

Let’s check how much you’ve learned from our

lesson today.

Let us have our group work again. You will work again
as a group, so again what are the important things that
you will do?
Very good!
(will give the activities for each group)
Work as a group, share ideas and cooperate.

Activities:
Group 1. Tell if the pictures show line of symmetry. Write
YES or NO

_____1. _______4.

_____2. _______5.

_____3.

Group 2. Draw the second half of each symmetrical figure.

1. 4.

2. 5.

3.

Group 3. Draw 5 figures that show line of symmetry.

For each group, once you are done, do the YES CLAP
and post your answers on the board, then go back to your
respective seats.
(check the answers)

The group who will get the highest point will receive a
prize!

Since you experienced to work as a group, now it’s time

to work individually. Get your paper and a pencil and you
will have some exercises.

IV. Evaluation
Read the sentences and answer what is asked. Choose
from the box the correct answer and write on the space
before the number.
__________________1. When one half of a figure looks
like the mirror image of the other half.
__________________2. An imaginary line that divides a
figure into two matching sides.
__________________3. Is an example of symmetry.

Draw a smiley face on the blank if the lines

indicate the line of symmetry, and sad face if not.

_______4. _______7.

______5. _______8.

______6.

Complete me!
For 4 points, complete the figure below.

V. Assignment:
Draw/cut (from magazines etc.) 5 pictures of the
things found in your home that show line of
symmetry. Paste them in a short bond paper.
