1. Define kelvin-plank statement and Claussius statement for 2nd law of thermodynamics.

2. Define heat capacity for constant volume and constant pressure. How are they related to each
another?

3. Write a short note on various thermodynamic diagrams and their applications.

4. A Carnot heat engine operates between a source at 1000 K and a sink at 300 K. If the heat
engine is supplied with heat at a rate of 800 kJ/min, determine:
(i) The thermal efficiency,
(ii) The power output of this heat engine.

5. Steam enters a turbine stage with an enthalpy of 3628 kJ/kg at 70 m/s and leaves the same
stage with an enthalpy of 2846 kJ/kg and a velocity of 124 m/s. Calculate the work done by the
steam.

6. Calculate the molar volume of methane at 673 K and 1.2 MPa using following equation of
state:
(i) Ideal gas law
(ii) Van-der-Waals equation of state, where a = 0.2303 Pa (m3/mol)2 and
b = 4.3073 x 105 m3/mol.

7. Nitrogen initially at 1 bar and 280 K, is compressed to 5 bar and 280 K in an isothermal
process. Determine the △U, △H, Q and W. Given, Cv = 20.786 kJ/kmol K and Cp = 29.1 kJ/kmol
K. Assume ideal gas.
8. Write a short note on Residual properties; Partial molar properties; Excess properties of
mixtures.
9. Explain in detail Carnot Cycle.
10. Write a short note on the importance of Joule’s Experiment in formulation of First law of
Thermodynamics.
