1. THE IPU1000 TELECOM DC/AC INVERTER

1.1 Overview
The IPU1000 series employs high-frequency PWM technology and a microprocessor that
controls all diagnostics and operations. The key features of the series are modularity, small
size, light weight, parallel capability, redundancy, high efficiency, high reliability, excellent
dynamic and static behavior and silent operation.

Each inverter occupies 9.5" horizontally and is 1U in height, so that each 19" 1U shelf can
house 2 inverter modules. Several shelves can be stacked to form a system with greater
capacity.

Conversion at high frequency results in smaller components that can be contained in a small
unit. Synchronization is made purely digitally employing advanced circuitry.

The front panel is designed for a simple and efficient operation using an LED display that
indicates the unit load level and any exceptional conditions.

The IPU1000 inverter can be used as a stand-alone unit; alternatively, multiple units (installed
in a special shelf) can be operated in parallel mode to enhance power capacity, as well as to
achieve (N+1) redundancy.

Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the internals of the IPU1000. Figure 2 on page 2
shows the unit in stand-alone operation. Figure 3 on page 3 show multiple units in a parallel
configuration, which provides higher current than a single unit.

The inverters are connected to an external 19" static-switch unit (model STSW-1U), to
provide a bypass path to an alternative ac source (see Figure 4 on page 4), and at the same
time making possible N+1 (or greater) redundancy.

1.2 Principles of Operation

Dc input voltage is boosted and converted to a 360 Vdc. This first stage also provides
isolation between input and output. This high voltage is then inverted to a 230 Vac by a
second stage. The dc-ac inversion uses a technique that increases efficiency and performs
complete four-quadrant operation. This provides the unit the ability to supply power to almost
any load.

A digital phase locked loop system synchronizes the inverter to the parallel bus to provide
paralleling of several modules together. A low-power dc-dc block powers all circuits.

1.3 Operating multiple IPU1000 units

Multiple IPU1000 units can be connected together in a single system. There are two basic
modes of operating multiple IPU1000 units:

Parallel mode: The units wait for each other to initialize up before supplying output, and
begin to supply output together. This mode is appropriate when the peak system load is
higher than that of a single module.

Independent mode: Each unit begins to provide power to the load immediately after its
initialization, without waiting for the other units to complete their initialization. If the peak load
is greater than the output of a single module, a static switch can be included in the system.
The static switch waits until all the units have initialized before providing power to the load.

Using a static switch with units in independent mode has the advantage over parallel mode in
that it provides redundancy capability – "extra" (redundant) IPU1000 units can be included in
Model IPU1000 User Guide and Instruction Manual 1
User Guide Gamatronic Electronic Industries Ltd.

the system so that if one or more units fail, the system will still be able to provide sufficient
power for the peak load.

The above operation modes - parallel or independent - are determined by internal jumper
settings set at the factory. Your sales representative will help you determine the most
appropriate option for your needs.

4. OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

4.1 Turning the units on

1. Connecting the IPU1000 input to the dc source starts up the unit, provided the input
voltage is >51 Vdc for 48 V applications, or >25.5 Vdc for 24 Vdc applications.
2. When multiple units are connected in parallel, only when all parallel units are ready
will all of them connect their output circuit at the same time. Each unit’s output circuit
is separated from the parallel circuit by a relay.
3. When a battery backup is used with the IPU1000, the normally 48 Vdc (or 24 Vdc)
input power source should be set to 53~54 Vdc (26~27 Vdc) to keep the battery
properly charged.

4.2 Load level indicator

The ac output load level indicator is located on the left side of the IPU1000 front panel, and
consists of five LEDs arranged to form a bar graph.

4.3 ON / OFF button

The on/off button is located on the left side of the IPU1000 front panel, above the column of
five LEDs that form the load indicator. The button is recessed to prevent accidental operation.

Switching the unit off and on reinitializes the microprocessor. This can be done in the rare
case that the microprocessor "freezes" for any reason and the inverter stops functioning.

In the event that the IPU1000 powers itself off automatically due to a prolonged overload or
output short-circuit, it is necessary to press the on/off button for the inverter to resume
operation after resolution of the overload or short-circuit.

4.4 When dc input voltage is low

When the inverter is operating in battery mode (ac input is absent) the dc voltage decreases
slowly to the disconnect level, which is about 42 Vdc for 48 V applications or 21 Vdc for 24 V
applications. When the disconnect level is reached, the unit ceases operation to prevent deep
discharge of the batteries.

When the input dc voltage rises to >51 Vdc (or >25.5 Vdc) the IPU1000 restarts itself. This
hysteresis of 9 V (4.5 V) between shutdown level and restart level eliminates "hiccup"
behavior of the system when the input voltage is in the vicinity of the shutdown level.

4.5 When system is overloaded

When the output current exceeds 4.5 A (for 48 Vdc applications) or 2.25 A (for 24 Vdc
applications), LEDs #3 blinks and the IPU1000 shuts down. The unit attempts to resume
operation every few seconds, but shuts itself down again immediately if the overload
condition is still present. If the overload condition has ended, the unit returns to normal
operation.

4.6 Load level and inverter status indicators

The front panel of the IPU1000 includes a column of five green LEDs.

Figure 11: Load level bar graph / Exceptional status indicator

These five LEDs serve as an ac output load indicator when the IPU1000 is in normal
mode, and as a status indicator in the event of an exceptional condition.

4.6.1 Load level indicator

When the IPU1000 is operating – that is, when it is receiving input power from an external dc
source – the column of five LEDs serves as a load-level indicator.

Table 1 explains how to interpret the LEDs in this situation.

Table 1: The LED column as a load-level indicator
LEDS LIT LED BEHAVIOR COMMENT
#1 Blinking Load level is between 0 and 20 %.
#1 Steady ON Load level is between 20 and 40 %.
#1 #2 Steady ON Load level is between 40 and 60 %.

#1 #2 #3 #4 Steady ON Load level is between 80 and 100 %.
#1 #2 #3 #4 #5 All blinking The inverter is overloaded but still operating.

4.6.2 Inverter status indicator

When the inverter encounters an irregular condition – such as low input voltage or an
overload condition or an internal malfunction of the inverter – it uses the LED display as a
status indicator. Table 2 below explains how to interpret the LED display in such a situation.

#5 Blinking The inverter is in the "off" state.
• The inverter is seriously overloaded, or there is a short-circuit in
the load or at the inverter output terminals.

Immediately upon detecting the overload or short-circuit, the

inverter automatically pauses itself (stops producing output), then
after a short wait tries to resume normal operation (LED #5 blinks,
LEDs #2, #3, and #4 turn on briefly).

If the overload or short-circuit condition persists the inverter again

pauses and after a short wait again tries to resume normal
operation.
#2, #3, & #4 Blinking
If the overload or short-circuit condition still persists, then after
total of 7 cycles of "pausing and retrying", the inverter turns itself
off and remains off, and LEDs #2, #3, and #4 blink on and off until
the overload or short-circuit condition is resolved.

After the overload or short-circuit condition has been resolved, to

restart the inverter it is necessary to push the on/off button on the
IPU1000 front panel.
• In the event of an internal malfunction of the inverter LEDs 2, 3,
and 4 continuously blink on and off.
