MEMORANDUM

DATE: February 25, 2020

TO: Professor LeCompte
FROM: Jariam N. Ortiz Rodríguez
SUBJECT: Emergency Management Conference

This Tuesday, February 25, 2020 I visited the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce to
participate in a conference about emergency management. The conference took place in room
114 at the Academic Building at 12:00pm and finished at 1:20 pm. The instructor and trainer
José Ruiz presided the conference. Students and some professors attended the conference.
This report briefly resumes the more important points of the conference.

IMPORTANT POINTS OF THE CONFERENCE

José Ruiz is a trainer and instructor for the Seismic Network in the area of Ponce and other
municipalities. He began the conference by giving a brief history of earthquakes in Puerto
Rico. He also explained that disinformation and uncertainty is what causes fear and chaos,
so he proceeded to give a scientific explanation of what is happening in the country. José
explained that earthquakes are the Earth’s natural way of releasing energy, and that is has
been happening everywhere, all throughout history. He presented what the effects of a big
earthquake would be and what we should do, hypothetically, in case of a tsunami. Ruiz
recommended the audience to prepare an emergency bag and to have it in the trunk of our
car in case of an emergency. He invited us to a triage that will happen at the University of
Puerto Rico at Ponce on March 17 th, 24th and 31st, 2020. The purpose of said triage is to
organize and prepare the student body to become certified rescuers in case an emergency
happens at the university. He ended the conference by asking questions and answering doubts
from the people who attended.

BENEFIT OF ATTENDING
All this information related to the current events in our country is very helpful, especially for
the student body. It is very important that we are prepared, because an emergency could strike
at any moment. We should take José’s recommendation and prepare a bag with important
documents and first aid products and keep it in our cars, because we never know when we
could need it. It is a good idea to have a triage in our university. It is very important that we
become certified rescuers, because if an emergency were to happen, no one can come in or
get out of our buildings until the immediate emergency has passed, so we have to rely on
each other when it comes to rescuing and first aid assistance.

CLOSING
I am glad that I attended this particular conference. Even though I would not want anything
bad to happen anytime soon, I am looking forward to attend the triage, so I can further
educate myself when it comes to emergency management. I plan to become a doctor, and it
could further introduce me to the field I desire.
