3. Abstraction

Today, we are going to discuss the Online Platforms ICT Content Development.

1. Social Media Platforms

A social platform is a Web-based technology that enables the development,
deployment and management of social media solutions and services. It provides the
ability to create social media websites and services with complete social
media network functionality. There are so many social media platforms. We take a look
at three of the most popular social media  platforms : facebook, twitter and instagram.

Facebook
Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows
registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages

and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. The site, which is available in 37
different languages, includes public features such as:
Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and
share with your family and friends online. Originally designed for college students,
Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard
University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join
Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with more than 1
billion users worldwide. According to Pew Research Center,  Facebook remains the
most popular social media platform

Twitter
Twitter is a social networking site that allows people all over the world to
comment on news, events and things that are happening to them as they
occur. Known as ‘microblogging‘, these comments – ‘tweets’ – have to be
very short.
Conversely, Twitter is also about discovering interesting people online, and
following their burst messages for as long as they are interesting.
Twitter is very simple to use as broadcaster or receiver. You join with a free account
and Twitter name. Then you send broadcasts daily, or even hourly. Go to the ‘What’s
Happening’ box, type 140 characters or less, and click ‘Tweet’. You will most likely
include some kind of hyperlink.
To receive Twitter feeds, you simply find someone interesting (celebrities included),
and ‘follow’ them to subscribe to their tweet microblogs. Once a person becomes
uninteresting to you, you simply ‘unfollow’ them.
You then choose to read your daily Twitter feeds through any of various Twitter
readers.

Instagram
Instagram is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos
from a smartphone.
Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account
has a profile and a news feed.
When you post a photo or video on Instagram, it will be displayed on your
profile. Other users who follow you will see your posts in their own feed. Likewise,
you’ll see posts from other users who you choose to follow.
Pretty straight forward, right? It’s like a simplified version of Facebook, with an
emphasis on mobile use and visual sharing. Just like other social networks, you can
interact with other users on Instagram by following them, being followed by them,
commenting, liking, tagging and private messaging.
Instagram is available for free on iOS and Android devices. It can also be accessed
on the web from a computer, but users can only upload and share photos or videos from
their devices.

2. Blogging Platforms
A blogging platform is the software or service that you use to publish your content
onto the internet in the form of a blog. A blog platform is a specific form of a content
management system. For this blog, we take a look at three of the most popular blogging
platforms : wordpress, blogger and tumblr.

WordPress
The world’s most popular blogging platform, WordPress offers a
free and premium platform. WordPress is an online, open source
website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it’s
probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website
content management system (or CMS) in existence today.

Blogger

Blogger is a free blogging platform by Google. And it is extremely

popular. Millions of blogs run on this free platform.
Benefits to Blogging with Blogger.com:
 Easy to setup
 Lots of free templates and designs
 No need to know or use custom code

Tumblr

MichelleDeGuzman80XYZ@gmail.com 2
Tumblr is a great blogging platform optimized specifically for bloggers who want to
publish short-form content, such as micro-blogs, quotes, images, videos, and animated
GIFs. Tumblr is also a community of users, ready to promote and comment on each
other’s work.
Blogging on Tumblr is probably one of the easiest ways to start blogging. The
options are fairly limited allowing you to begin blogging right away. Because of how the
network is setup it is actually a mix of Twitter and WordPress.

4. Application

GROUP ACTIVITY.
Class will be divided into two groups again.Group 1 represents “team social media”
while group 2 represents “team bloggers”. Same group members from the first activity.
Each group will create a 5 - 8 mins video/podcast on the social networking
platformof there choice regarding the two topics : social media platform and blogging
platform. Divide the 2 topics on each group.
They will be required to include the following during their video/podcast.
 What is the name of the platform?
 What is the main purpose of the platform?
 How does the platform works?
 Do you think this platform is good or bad (or both) for social media? Why?
 Any other interesting facts

IV. Evaluation

Students will be graded on the video/podcast they have presented.

Students will also be required to respond to the teachers blog post question of "In your
opinion does social media cause more good or bad?" Students will be asked to write a 3-
5 sentence response.
