Learning from Korean Cities

International Field Workshops for Architecture Students, Mokpo’19

A total of 10 students and 3 faculties from BVCOA will comprise the Indian contingent. The
workshop is going to be conducted in Mokpo, South Korea. The field workshop will be followed by a
visit to Seoul for 4 days.

Mokpo, South Korea

Mokpo is located in the eastern part of the Mt. Yudal Mountain. It has a long tradition as a military
strategic point and a major port where the independence movement and democracy blossomed. Since
its opening in 1897, it was used as a main harbour for grafting of grains and thus Japanese settlements
(Jeoksan gaok) were formed. The architecture that was built during this period is regarded as modern
cultural heritage or as a remnant of Japanese imperialism. With the expansion of the city centred
around Mokpo Station, the area remains a downtown area, but there are still many traces of modern
architecture and urban structures.

Workshop Learnings/Outcomes
• An insight into cultural sensitivity of local residents, cultural diversity and city governance
• Re-discovering the historic places, activities and associated memories through various
methods and ‘archives’
• Involve the local residents in decision making by providing systematic opportunities to
accept diverse activities and practices
• Develop strategies to revitalize the city’s cultural heritage over a long-term by co-ordinating
with various agencies
• Rebuild the cultural identity of Mokpo City
