How to Configure Outlook 2007/2010 to check your Gmail Account

The first step is to turn on IMAP in your Google Account:

1. Log in here: https://gmail.com


1. username: pid@vt.edu, password: your Google password (different from your
PID password)
2. Click on the gear in the upper right corner and choose settings
3. Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP
4. Choose Enable IMAP and click Save Changes

You can log out of Gmail.

The next steps are down in Outlook. Note: It is assumed that you already have some type of
account setup in Outlook. If you do not, then you will prompted to setup an account the first
time you run Outlook.

For Outlook 2007 For Outlook 2010


Go to the File tab, click Account Settings,
Go to Tools -> Account Settings
Account Settings

From this point, both versions of Outlook will look the same.

1. From the E-mail tab, click on New...


2. Select E-mail Account, and click Next
3. Select Manually configure settings or additional server types, click Next
4. Choose Internet E-mail, click Next
5. Fill out the information:
1. Your Name: Your_Name
2. E-mail Address:
your_PID@vt.edu
3. Account Type: Choose IMAP
4. Incoming mail server:
imap.gmail.com
5. Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
smtp.gmail.com
6. User name: your_PID@vt.edu
(note: make sure that you add
the "@vt.edu")
7. Password:
your_Google_password
6. Click on the More Settings... button
7. From the General tab, Give your account a name (ex. Google)
8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab and check: My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication
9. Click on the Advanced tab, change the following
settings:
1. Under Incoming server (IMAP), Use the
following type of encrypted connection:
Choose SSL
2. Under Outgoing server (SMTP), Use the
following type of encrypted connection:
Choose TLS
3. Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port
number (set to 25 by default) to 587

10. Click OK to close the Advanced settings


11. Click Next (Outlook will test the settings)
12. Click Finish

Your Google account will now show up on the Folder List. Expand the new account, and you
will see the inbox. If you expand the [Gmail] folder, you will see the Sent Mail, Trash, and
Spam folders.
