“PLURILINGVISM” CONTEST

There will be 10 points granted.
Allotted time: 60 minutes.

I. Translate into Romanian the excerpt below. (30 points)

What I needed most was a boat in which I could take the things to land, but there were none,
so I set to work to make a raft of the boards of the ship.
All this was hard work, but at last I did it. I took a lot of bread and rice, some cheese,
meat, corn, some clothes and a large box of tools. As well as these I found some guns, powder
and shot, and two swords, all of which I put on my raft, as I thought they will be of great use.
My next task was to get to shore with my goods, which I found by no means easy. Once I
and my things were almost thrown into the sea by a big wave, but with much care I was at last
able to guide my raft to land. I did this with an old oar I had found on the ship.

II. Translate into Romanian the following sentences. (15 points)

1. The policeman did not want anyone to know about his wedding.
2. When you saw me at the airport this morning I was seeing a friend off.
3. The snake told himself that it was better to be a snake than an owl, for the simple reason that no
owl had ever been able to creep among the trees when it was raining.
4. The milkman must have drunk milk instead of beer last night because the milk is gone, and he is
not drunk at all.
5. The early bird catches the worm.

III. Translate into English the excerpt below. (30 points)

Nu luați micul dejun înainte de opt, nu-i așa? Aș vrea să trec pe la voi și să vă găsesc pe
toți acasă. Nu v-am văzut de multă vreme și mi-e dor de voi toți. Ultima dată când v-am văzut
eram atât de ocupat și de preocupat de plecarea mea în străinătate, încât n-am prea avut timp să
stăm de vorbă. Aștept cu nerăbdare să vă văd.
IV. Translate into English the following sentences. (15 points)
1. Ce-ai face dacă n-aș fi aici să te ajut?
2. M-a întrebat dacă știu când s-a născut Eminescu.
3. Deși pare atât de tânăr, trebuie să știi că a împlinit ieri 90 de ani.
4. Stau de o oră aici și sunt foarte obosită.
5. – Vă cunoașteți?
– Da, ne-am cunoscut acum un an la un examen.

I. Translate into Romanian the excerpt below. (30 points)
Cel mai mult îmi trebuia o barcă în care să-mi aduc pe uscat/ țărm lucrurile, dar nu era/ nu
mai rămăsese niciuna, așa ca m-am apucat de lucru/ treabă să fac/ construiesc o plută din
scândurile corabiei.
A fost o treabă foarte grea dar până la urmă am făcut-o/ încheiat-o. Am luat o mulțime de
pâine și orez, niște brânză, carne, grâu/ grâne, niște haine și o ladă/ cutie mare cu unelte. Pe lângă
astea am mai găsit și niște arme/ flinte/ puști, pulbere/ praf de pușcă și alice, precum și două
săbii, și le-am pus pe toate pe plută, căci m-am găndit că îmi vor fi de mare folos.
(Acum) Sarcina mea următoare era să ajung la țărm cu lucrurile/ bunurile mele, ceea ce am
constatat că nu e/ era deloc ușor. Odată era cât pe-aci să mă răstoarne în mare un val mare/ cât
toate zilele, împreună cu lucrurile mele, dar cu multă grijă am izbutit în cele din urmă să-mi
îndrept pluta către uscat. Asta am făcut-o cu ajutorul unei vâsle vechi pe car o găsisem/ am găsit-
o în corabie.

II. Translate into Romanian the following sentences. (15 points)

1. Poliţistul nu voia să ştie nimeni despre nunta lui.
2. Azi dimineață când m-ai văzut/ întâlnit la aeroport îmi conduceam un prieten/ o prietenă.
3. Şarpele îşi zise în sinea lui că este mai bine să fii şarpe decât bufniţă, pentru simplul motiv
că nicio bufniţă nu a putut niciodată să se târască printre pomi când ploua.
4. Precis că lăptarul a băut lapte în loc de bere aseară, pentru că nu mai este lapte, iar el nu
este deloc beat.
5. Cine se scoală de dimineaţă departe ajunge.

III. Translate into English the excerpt below. (30 points)

You do not (have) breakfast before 8 o’clock, do you? I would like to visit/call you and to
find you at home. I haven’t seen you for a long time and I miss you all. The last time I saw you I
was so busy and concerned/ preoccupied with my going abroad, that we hardly/ scarcely/ barely
had (any) time to talk. I am (eagerly) looking forward to seeing you.
IV. Translate into English the following sentences. (15points)
1. What would you do if I were not here to help you?
2. He asked me if I knew when Eminescu was born/ had been born.
3. Although he looks so young, you must know that he was ninety (years old) yesterday.
4. I have been (staying) here for an hour and I am very tired.
5. ‘Have you met (before)?’/ ‘Do you know each other?’
‘Yes, we met at an examination a year ago.’
