1. Project Features
- The Kochi Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kochi in Kerala, India.
- It was opened to the public within four years of starting construction, making it the fastest
completed metro project in India until the Lucknow Metro overtook it.
- The Kochi metro project is the first metro in the country which connects rail, road and
water transport facilities.
- The first phase is being set up at an estimated cost of ₹51.81 billion (US$750 million).
On October 2017, Kochi Metro was named the Best Urban Mobility Project in India by
the Urban Development Ministry, as part of the Urban Mobility India (UMI) international
conference hosted by the ministry every year.
- The 25.65km metro line will run from Aluva to Petta and will include 22 stations.
- The Kochi Metro Rail Project is also known as Komet or K-3C.
- The $950m project will be operated by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL), a joint venture
between the Central and State governments of India.

2. Project Advantages
- Requires 1/5th energy per passenger km compared to road-based system.
- Causes no air pollution in the city.
- Causes lesser noise level.
- Occupies no road space if underground and only about 2 meters width of the road if elevated.
- Carries same amount of traffic as 5 lanes of bus traffic or 12 lanes of private motor cars (either
way), if it is a light capacity system.
- Is more reliable, comfortable and safer than road based system.
- Reduces journey time by anything between 50% and 75% depending on road conditions.
- Heavy traffic congestion has necessitated the development of a metro rail system in Kochi, where
buses were the major public transportation system in Kochi.
- It also reduces pollution and noise levels, as well as congestion on city roads.
- The project created employment opportunities for the local people.

5. Completion
- Since peoples are unaware of benefits that they going to get, it is State government and
municipalities responsibilities to create awareness among the peoples by advertisement
and promotions.

- State government’s needs to understand the concerns of peoples and change the project
scopes and designs if possible to mitigate the concerns.
- Some media publications projecting wrong picture of project, hence it is state
government responsibilities to communicate with media on routine basis.
- Present the facts and statistics and try to build trust so that media will be move to
desired level of engagement.
- Municipal corporations are neutral and not actively participating in project. Its
government official’s responsibilities to plan the activities with corporation officials and
closely monitor the project with better co-ordinations.
