BFC 32602 students – Mechanical and Electrical System

WAN ALISA NAZIRA BT WAN AB RAHMAN AF170188

Please read the instructions carefully before answering the question.

You are required to obtain information through online sources (google, books, library, etc.) when
necessary.

Question.

1. There are several types of basic whole-house mechanical ventilation system. With the
appropriate illustrations, briefly explain the following whole-house mechanical
ventilation system:

a. Supply system
(4 marks)

- A supply system slightly pressurizes the house by drawing outdoor air into the house.
- This pressurization pushes indoor air out through small openings in the building, which
helps to prevent outside moisture and pollutants from getting in through these passages.
- Positive indoor pressure also protects against back drafting
Class Assignment (FOC-Week 6)
b. Balance system

- A balanced central system uses two fans (supply and exhaust fans working in cooperation)
and creates a neutral, or balanced pressure.

- Supply air = exhaust air

- Complex system but provide better fresh air distribution.

- In a balanced system, air is supplied to some rooms and exhausted from others. An
optional heat- or energy-recovery unit transfers heat or humidity from one air stream to the
other. Spot exhaust is included where necessary.

2. The integration of mechanical ventilation systems with cooling mechanisms can be

referred to as air-conditioning systems. One of the air-conditioning systems is known as a
centralized air-conditioning system. It is usually installed in a large building.

a. Briefly explain about the system.

Central air conditioning (or central A/C) is a system in which air is cooled at a central
location and distributed to and from rooms by one or more fans and ductwork. The
work of the air conditioner compressor is what makes the whole process of air
conditioning possible. The compression of the refrigerant gas enables it to discharge
heat out of the house, which is how the cool air is created.

b. By providing appropriate picture, describe the function of the following centralize

air- conditioning components:
Class Assignment (FOC-Week 6)

I. air handling unit (AHU)

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a
heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system

II. chiller system

The chiller is the section of the system where an exchange of heat occurred
between the water that goes to the building and the evaporator. The water leaves
the chilled water evaporator at 45°F or 7°C. This chilled-water is then circulated
through the entire building by the use of a pump
III. ducting system

The duct, or air distribution, system used in cooling and heating your home is a
collection of tubes that distributes the heated or cooled air to the different rooms.
This branching network of round or rectangular tubes usually constructed of
sheet metal, fiberglass board, or a flexible plastic-and-wire composite is found
within your home. The duct system is designed to supply rooms with air that is
“conditioned” that is, heated or cooled by the heating, ventilation, and air
conditioning (HVAC) equipment and to circulate or return the same volume of
air back to the HVAC equipment.
Class Assignment (FOC-Week 6)

IV. variable air volume (VAV)

VAV system incorporates one supply duct that, when in cooling mode,
distributes supply air at a constant temperature of approximately 55 °F (13 °C).
Because the supply air temperature is constant, the air flow rate must vary to
meet the rising and falling heat gains or losses within the thermal zone served
