SOUND RECORDING LAB

SOUND FREQUENCY:

Frequency Is the Speed of Vibration. This Also Determines the Pitch of a Certain
Sound or noise. Frequency is measured in Hertz.

PRINCIPLES OF SOUND:

DOPPLER EFFECT:

The doppler effect is the increase or decrease in the frequency of a sound or light.
It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who described the
phenomenon in 1842. It is the change in frequency of a wave in relation to an
observer who is moving relative to the wave source. For example, a passing
ambulance siren can cause an increase in the frequency of sound.
SOUND REFRACTION:
Refraction is the bending of waves when they enter a medium where their speed
is different. For example, sound waves are known to refract when traveling over
water. Furthermore, the direction of the wave changes, refracting downwards
towards the water.

SOUND REFLECTION;

A sound reflection is the frequency and vibration of sound reflecting and

containing in one room. An example of sound reflection would be an echo In a
new house, as there is a lot of space and walls in which the vibrations can bounce
off of.
SOUND DIFFRACTION:

Sound diffraction is the bending of sound waves in and around small objects and
obstacles. The amount of diffraction is dependent on the size of an object or
obstacle.
INTERIOR SOUND:

KITCHEN:

My first interior sound is a clip-on YouTube of a large kitchen in a restaurant. As

you can hear in the video, the microphone based in the kitchen presents to us a
noisy and clattery atmosphere. During the 2-minute video, you can hear objects
clattering such as spoons, knives, plates etc. If you continue to listen closely
behind all the clattering and chefs communicating, you can hear the calm sizzle of
the pans and food cooking also. During this video, sound diffraction is occurred
due to all the corners and obstacles. The sound needed to bend across the edge
of the counters and tables in order to reach the microphone.

JOE ROGAN PODCAST:

During this video clip, you can hear sound very clearly with no background noise
or white noise. This is due to the fact, the microphones used are clearly high-tech
as it seems that the podcast is based in a studio with a lot of high tech around.
Due to this, the studio will be insulated with soundproof and absorbing materials
like foam to keep noise inside. In the clip, there is no echoing sounds or reverb
once again due to the fact the environment is based in a professional studio with
professional equipment. As the microphones are relatively close to their faces and
mouths, we can clearly hear nothing but their voices which is suitable for
podcasts.

2020 MACBOOK REVIEW:

This video clip is a review on the new 2020 MacBook air. As we can see from the
environment of the video clip, this video was taken in a studio type room. We can
see soundproof insulators in the background which absorb sound, making it hard
for echoes to form or for sound to come into the room or out of the room. Behind
the camera is also a high-tech microphone, hence why we can hear the speaker so
clearly whilst he is talking. Both this video clip and the podcast are clear to be in a
professional and studio type environment. Whereas the podcast is taken in a
studio, this video clip makes it seem as if this is a normal room/ studio, However,
with the equipment used in the background, you can see why there is no white
noise, or echoes in the not so packed room.

EXTERIOR SOUNDS:

MERCEDES A CLASS REVIEW:

This video is taken outdoors and is a review on a brand-new car, however, this is
taken professionally with the use of a modern camera which also increases the
use of its microphone and its features. As we can hear, the speaker does sound
rather clear however at some points, we can start to hear the wind blowing into
the microphone which adjusts the volume of the speaker. Furthermore, as we
continue through the video, at numerous points, we can hear the change in audio
as the microphone and the person speaking changes from exterior to interior,
proving the large difference in sound compared to exterior and interior. During
the speakers time outdoors, we can hear the difference between a professional
set up outdoors and a not so professional but moderate set up. An example of a
professional set up would be a news reporter, with a professional microphone
and camera on set.

CRISTIANO RONALDO IN PUBLIC:

From this clip we can tell by the sound that this was set in a busy area and the
quality of the sound/ microphone is much less. The surrounding noises are easy to
hear meaning that this clip was either not edited as well or does not have the best
microphone.
