DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION- NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

SCHOOLS DIVISION OF PASAY CITY

MODULE IN SCIENCE 8
First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 2

In this module, you will identify and explain the factors that affect potential and kinetic energy.
Specifically, you will:
a)define kinetic energy
b)determine the factors that affect the kinetic energy of an object

Energy exists in many different forms. Two of these are potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is
already discussed in the previous module. Can you still recall the different types of potential energy?
Study figure 1. What do you think will happen to the energy of the ball if it is kicked?

Self- Check: Figure 1. Kinetic energy is possessed by a moving object

by virtue of its motion.
Look at the following pictures. Then,
identify the types of potential energy. What is kinetic energy?
1. ___________
Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion.
If we want to accelerate an object, then PASAY S8FE- Q1-W3-02

we must apply a force.
2. ____________ Applying a force requires us to do work. After work has been done,
energy has been transferred to the object, and the object will be
moving with a new constant speed. The energy transferred is
3. ___________ known as kinetic energy, and it depends on the mass and speed
achieved.

Kinetic energy can be transferred between objects and transformed

into other kinds of energy. For example, a flying squirrel might
collide with a stationary chipmunk. Following the collision, some of
the initial kinetic energy of the squirrel might have been transferred
into the chipmunk or transformed to some other form of energy.

Are you ready to do the following activity?

I. Materials: 3 pcs marbles (1 large and 2 small)

II. Procedures:

A. Place one small marble on the floor. Do not allow it to move.

B. Flick the other small marble to hit the stationary small
marble. Observe what will happen.
C. Place again the small marble on the floor. Do not allow it to
move.
D. Flick the larger marble to hit the stationary small marble.
Observe what will happen.
III. ANALYSIS:

A. What happened to the second marble after it was hit by the other small marble? Draw and label your
observations. (Situation 1) Use arrows to emphasize directions.

B. What happened to the second marble after it was hit by the other large marble? Draw and label your
observations. (Situation 2) Use arrows to emphasize directions.

C. Was there work done on the stationary small marble by the other marble in both situations? Why do
you say so?

D. What form of energy was transferred to the second marble?

E. Which situation do you think the marble had possessed and transferred a larger energy?

F. What do you think is the variable (factor) that made this possible?

G. What conclusion can you make about the relationship of the energy possessed by the moving body and
2 its mass? PASAY S8FE- Q1-W3-02

H. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 but this time flick the small marble faster to hit the target stationary small marble.
What did you observe? Draw and label your observations. (Situation 3) Use arrows to emphasize
directions.

I. Now, repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the third time but this time flick the small marble slower to hit the target
stationary small marble. What did you observe? Draw and label your observations. (Situation 3) Use
arrows to emphasize directions.

ACTIVITY 1: Marbles Collide

J. Which situation do you think the marble had possessed and transferred a larger energy?
K. What do you think is the variable (factor) that made this possible?

L. What conclusion can you make about the relationship of the energy possessed by the moving body and
its velocity/speed?
