I. TOPIC:
Teach writing names and spelling words in cursive font.
II. OBJECTIVES/STANDARDS:
PA CC.1.4.3.L Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard
English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
General Lesson Objectives:
Following teacher instruction and practice, TSWBAT write their names in cursive using
the handwriting worksheet, using proper English grammar, capitalization, punctuation,
and spelling, to 100% accuracy.
III. TEACHING PROCEDURES:
1. Anticipatory Set –
a. Start lesson by asking students if they have ever written in cursive before. Have
students show you what words/letters they can write in cursive on the dry erase
table.
2. Development 1 –
a. Give each student a worksheet with their name written in cursive on it. Show
students with a highlighter how to trace words in cursive, explaining that all
cursive letters are connected and must hit the baseline. Dots and lines are added in
after the word is finished. Ask students questions throughout to ensure they are
understanding these key concepts.
3. Guided Practice 1 -
a. Have students trace their names using a highlighter and write their names on
the separate lines once they’ve practiced with the tracing.
4. Independent Practice 1 –
a. Provide students with a worksheet with their spelling words written in cursive.
Have students trace the words with a highlighter or skip to writing them on their
own if they feel comfortable.
8. Closure –
a. Go over worksheet with student and provide feedback. Encourage students to
keep practicing and give them extra name worksheets for them to use during their
free time if they would like to.
IV. MATERIALS:
 Cursive worksheets
 Pencil
 Dry erase board table and marker
V. ADAPTATIONS: Review certain concepts as needed depending on student understanding
and any misconceptions. Go slower and provide more time for students to do work if need be.
VI. EVALUATION:
1) Formative – Students will answer questions verbally.
2) Summative – Spelling word assignment.
VII. REFLECTION:
1) Write an assessment of the students’ performance and mastery in terms of each stated
objective. List each objective’s evaluation separately.
Following teacher instruction and practice, TSWBAT write their names in cursive using
the handwriting worksheet, using proper English grammar, capitalization, punctuation,
and spelling, to 100% accuracy.
The students did not meet this objective. As this was their first exposure to cursive
writing, the objective was within their frustration zone and expected too much of the
students. This being so, the students were not able to write their names to 100% accuracy.
One of the students was able to write his first name, but his last name and the full name
of the other student were not able to be accomplished.
2) Write a general self-evaluation including explanation for success or lack of it. Discuss
what changes might have produced better results and could be used in subsequent
lessons.

This lesson was rough. The two students I was working with had not been exposed to
cursive before and quickly became overwhelmed by the assignment. Having them
highlight and then write their full names in cursive was too intimidating to the students,
so they shut down. Instead of being excited to learn and practice, they were afraid of
failing. This led to heads down on the desks and refusal to do work. To improve this
lesson, I would teach individual letters first and focus first only on highlighting/tracing.
Then I would gradually have the students write the letters and words as they felt more
comfortable. Also, making this lesson more like a game would have made the students
more inclined to participate as well.
