ASSIGNMENT 1

1. Explain the difference between an algebraic expression and an equation and give an
example of each.
 Expressions do not include an equal sign and are basically mathematical
“phrase”. Equations include an equal sign, and show equivalency between two
mathematical expressions.
 For example, 3x+9 is an algebraic expression, but 4x+8=16 is an algebraic
equation.

2. Identify the constant: 4x – 3 ……………………………….

Type equation here .
4x−3=−3(The constant is−3)

3. Identify the coefficient: 6x + 19… ……………………………..

The coefficient of 6x+9= 6

Translate the following into algebraic expressions:

4. The sum of 4x and 5

= 4 x+5

5. The product of x and 3

¿3 x

6. The quantity 4 minus x divided by 3

4−x
=
3

7. 9 less than y

¿ y−9

8. 3 more than the quantity x times 18

¿ 3+18 x
9. The quotient of 50 and the quantity of x times 7

50
=
7x

Simplify the expression below by combining like terms:

10. 6x + 7x + x

6 x +7 x+ x =x ( 6+7+ 1 )=x ( 14 )=14 x

11. 7 x 2+ 3 x +5 x+ x2

7 x 2+ x 2 +3 x+ 5 x =8 x2 +8 x=x ( 8 x+8 )

12. 2xy + 3xy

2 xy+ 3 xy =xy ( 2+3 )=xy (5 )=5 xy
