Course Description and Content

English Arts I,a textbook in English for first year high school students,answers the call for instructional
materials geared towards the objective of making quality education available to all as conceived by the
Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) in its Philippine Secondary Schools Learning
Competencies circularized in 1998.

In the development of the textbook, English Arts, the following objectives were considered:

 to develop in the students an enlightened commitment to the national ideals by cherishing,


preserving, and developing moral, spiritual and socio-cultural values as well as other aspects of
the Filipino heritage through a study of Philippine literature;
 to encourage the students to obtain knowledge and form desirable attitudes for understanding
the nature and purpose of human kind,and other races, places and times, thereby promoting a
keen sense of self, family, national and international communities;
 to develop the students' skills on higher intellectual operations and more complex
comprehension and expression activities, and in thinking intelligently, critically, and creatively;
 to help the students acquire work skills, knowledge and information and a work ethicessential
for making an intelligent choice of an occupation or career and for specialized training in specific
occupations; and
 to broaden and heighten the students' abilities in and appreciation for maximizing their
potentials for self- fulfillment and for promoting the welfare of others.

English Arts I exposes the students to a wide variety of language experiences which aim to make
them aware that language is part of human behavior.
