TITLE: To Design and Manufacturing of Special Purpose Machine


Aim: To Design and Manufacturing of Dowel pin drilling machine.
Introduction:
Dowel pin are Industrial fastener that are used to join two or more component
together. When they are inserted into pressed fit pre-drilled holes, which must be
rigid while in use and also capable of keeping the assembled part aligned without
further fastening. Drilling operation is carried out on various centrifugal pumps.
The Assembly Department is divided into two types, they are
1. Horizontal split case assembly 2. Vertical split case assembly
Objectives:
1) To drill the hole at higher elevation and angular position.
2) All type of centrifugal pump will be able to operate using single machine.
3) To make the bed flexible, rigid and its must be easily accessible to workers.

Problem statement:Workers facing problem during drilling operation used for


alignment of shaft during the assembly. In case of heavy duty pumps this operation
is time consuming and costly.

Analysis of problem:
 In Assembly Department of Centrifugal pump, Pumps which are of smaller size
can be drilled on small machine but in case of large size pump cannot be drilled
on the same machine.
 Due to which the whole setup is to be shifted to another workshop for Boring
operation and also some time due to improper dimensions there is misalignment
of drilled holes and again same process is to be carried out which is time
consuming process, reduces productivity and expensive.
 As the setup is bulky, it is difficult for transporting from one place to another
and heavy duty cranes fails during transporting which causes unbalancing and
misalignment of impeller shaft which will damage the impeller blades.

Reason:
 Currently available machine is of smaller size and contain small size bed due to
which load carrying capacity is less.
 Restriction of drilling at higher elevation, due to smaller column height.
 For drilling operation of heavy duty pump, the assembly is moved from one
shop to another shop for boring operation, which is time consuming process.
 Excess up and down movement of worker during operation causes error in
alignment of shaft.
Solution:
Introduce large size drilling machine which will sustain for heavy duty pump and
also withstand for high loading capacity, vibration and resistance to the back force
which will drill the hole in the assembly section only.

Input:
 Bore Diameter to be drilled = 1 inch (25.4mm) depend on type of pump
 Depth of drill = 50 mm
 Pump on which operation need to be carried out : 48-48 DV
Cost Estimated:
Tentative cost of machine is 7 to 10 lakhs.
