Activity 3:

1. The included angle for the V-belt is usually

a. 20° – 30° b. 40° – 60° *c. 30° – 40° d. 60° – 80°

2. The wire ropes make contact at

*a. bottom of groove of the pulley b. sides of groove of the pulley

c. sides and bottom of groove of the pulley d. anywhere in the groove of the pulley

Activity 4:

A V-belt drive consists of three V-belts in parallel on grooved pulleys of the same size. The angle of
groove is 30° and the coefficient of friction 0.12. The cross-sectional area of each belt is 800 mm2 and
the permissible safe stress in the material is 3 MPa. Calculate the power that can be transmitted
between two pulleys 400 mm in diameter rotating at 960 rpm.

Given: Ac = 800 𝑚𝑚2 𝜎 = 3Mpa D = 400 mm N = 960 rpm Angle = 30 degrees µ = 0.12

Solution:
𝜋𝐷𝑁 𝜋(400)(960)
𝑉= = = 20106.193 𝑚𝑚/ sec 𝑜𝑟 20.10 𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐
60 60

𝑇 = 𝜎 × 𝐴 = 3 𝑀𝑝𝑎 × 800 𝑚𝑚2 = 2400 𝑁 ; Tension on tight side of belt

𝑇 𝛽
2.3 log ( 1 ) = 𝜇 ∙ 𝜃 ∙ csc ; 𝜃 = 180° = 𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠 so,
𝑇2 2

𝑇1 30°
2.3 log ( ) = 0.12 ∙ 𝜋 ∙ cos
𝑇2 2

𝑇 1.456 𝑇1
2.3 log ( 1 ) = = 0.633, = 4.3; 𝑇1 = 2400 𝑁 𝑡ℎ𝑢𝑠, 𝑇2 = 558.13 𝑁
𝑇2 2.3 𝑇2
𝑃 = (𝑇1 − 𝑇2 ) 𝑉 = ( 2400 𝑁 − 558.13 𝑁) ∙ 20.10 𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐 = 37021.58 W

𝑃𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑃 × 3 = 37021.58 𝑊 ∙ 3 = 111,064.76 𝑊 𝑜𝑟 𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟎𝟔 𝑲𝑾
