North Integrated Transport Terminal Complex (NITTC)

NAME OF UNIVERSITY AND COUNTRY:

University of Santo Tomas, Philippines

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:

“Design in architecture is to create solutions to problems by creating

perceived environments based on its conditions.”

It has been said that design has the unique power to solve problems. The same thing happens in
architecture. We design structures to solve the problem that both man and the environment face. The
solutions that are created always come from the givens inherent in the problem. Good design always
understands the needs of the user. It is a presentation of a perceived environment influenced by the
observation of what already exists. Solutions must always have a unique poetic approach to design. It
finds a balance between reflecting on the past and looking towards what is yet to come and shaping the
future.

DESIGN CONCEPT:

(kailangan pa ayusin)
“PAGHAHABI”
Interlacing of Culture and Traditions
Because of the fast advances in the field of transportation, his world keeps getting smaller and
smaller. In the past, man would always be bounded by distance. This distance became a natural barrier
to protect and preserve his culture. With the advent of new roads and other transportation facilities, it
has abled man to travel, to learn and to experience new things. Thus different cultures have been
interwoven into hybrid or mixed identities. Sadly, it has also become the cause of the loss of identity.
Some people became fond of the new things they have learned that became the reason of neglect of
their own culture.

With this project, an Integrated Transportation Terminal, we want to show that, the interlacing
of cultures and traditions is a good thing. We want to showcase the best of what North Luzon could
offer. Since the project is intended for the North Luzon commuters, we want to imprint the places that
could make people reminisce about North Luzon. Different landscapes of each region would be
represented in the site:

Region I: Ilocos Region Wavy waterfront

Region II: Cagayan Valley Mountain ranges

Region III: Central Luzon Wide Plains

CAR: Cordillera Administrative Region: Rice Terraces

The design would show that through diversity, there is strength. The Philippines is a good
mixture of different cultures. The people’s ability to adapt to changes is our ultimate strength that
allows us to grow and to progress.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

It is the intent of this project to magnify the problems besetting today’s traffic planning. In the end, it
must be remembered that no matter how modern the mode of transport is, if integrated with the
mentality of most Filipinos, the problem of traffic will always haunt us. It must be remembered too, that
it is not for us to change the mentality of our countrymen, but we can instill change through good
planning and architecture and ensure results worthy of progress.

1. To create an integrated terminal that will facilitate and integrate the operations of the existing
modes of transport. Unfortunately, as the country does not desire phasing out unreliable and
inefficient modes of transport such as the jeepneys and pedicabs, their operation - together
with other modes such as rails, buses, etc – should be properly managed, controlled and
coordinated to ensure viability for one and the other and allow a smooth operations for all to
occur.
2. To re-establish the virtues of discipline amongst operators, drivers, and the traveling public.
Good architecture and planning can impose upon its users the virtue of discipline. For with good
architecture and planning comes a different perception of space and human activity.
3. To create an integrated terminal that will be efficient, effective, safe, comfortable, convenient
and reliable. With more varying modes of transport being developed and utilized, the future for
the riding public should be one of democratic choice and not simply a lack of alternativeness.
4. To serve as a prototype for integrated transport terminal design in the metropolis that is at part
with international standards with focus on tropical architecture and innovative technology.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:

(kailangan pa iexpound)

1. To design an Integrated Transport Terminal that would exhibit the culture, traditions and
aspirations of the users of the structure.
2. To design a systematic circulation flow of vehicles and people that would lessen traffic problems
in the site.
3. To design spaces in the Integrated Transport Terminal that would allow commuters to interact
with each other
4. To design an Integrated Transport Terminal that would adhere to principles of Sustainability and
Tropical Architecture
