Training Course
1.1 TheObjective
The objective of this distance course is to give the Trainee an introduction to hazards involved in
working in a galley and associated spaces and the precautions necessary to avoid them. It will also
give an introduction to the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness in the galley environment.
Upon completion a course diploma for Galley Operation Training – Messmann and Galley Boy will
be issued.
1.2 Prerequisites
None
NOTE!!!!
CBT test results must not be older than 12 months.
Incomplete documentation/not passing evaluation will be shredded and a complete new set must be
sent.

The subject in the e-mail must be, “Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley Boy”.
Candidate detail page completed with full name, date of birth, address and nationality, ship’s
name, invoicing addressetc.
Copy of ID of person who is signing the checklist (Master orAssessor).
One-pagecopyfrom thecandidate’sdischargebook,passportorsimilarconfirmingthefull
name, date of birth andnationality.
Copy of detailed CBT report from the CBT module # 220 and #221
All documents signed and verified by Master or Assessor and marked with ship’s/office
stamp.
Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley Boy checklist read and signed by
master/assessor.
Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley Boy documentation checklist completed
and signed bycandidate.
Upon receipt of all fully completed documentation as outlined in the Checklist 1.8, Seagull AS (SG)
will issue a Course Diploma and send this to the company.
All documentation must be signed and verified by Master or Assessor onboard or office Assessor
and marked with the ship’s/office’s stamp. The documentation must be sent to Seagull.
Para 1.8 shall be the first page of the shipment.

1.8 Documentation Checklist for Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley
Boy
The following documents, duly completed, must be submitted to Seagull AS for evaluation and
approval before Seagull AS can issue Course Diploma.

and signed by Master/Assessor.
Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley Boy – documentation checklist (1.8)
completed and signed bycandidate.

1.10 Galley Operation Training – Messman and Galley Boy - verificationChecklist
To ensure all Seagull courses are done according to our procedures, all documents and checklists
must be signed and stamped. This must be done by Master or a qualified onboard Assessor or an
office Assessor.
If Seagull AS finds that an application is partially or entirely a duplicate of another application, the
application will be rejected and certificate will not be issued.
The candidate and company will be notified.
The Master/Assessor must take all necessary precautions to ensure that all these requirements are
met.
The Master/Assessor is jointly responsible that the applications are according to our procedures and
guidelines. In STCW regulation I/6 and section A-I/6 is stated that all training and seafarers are
required to be administered, supervised and monitored. The Master/Assessor is part of fulfilling this
requirement.

2.1 Background
MLC 2006, mentioned as the fourth pillar of international maritime law, entered into force 20 thof
August 2013. Title 3 in MLC 2006 specifies detailed rules for accommodation, recreational facilities,
food and catering. The purpose of the food and catering regulations are to ensure that seafarers
have access to good quality food and drinking water provided under regulated hygienic conditions.
The background of this Distance Course is to help the galley staff to fulfil requirements in MLC 2006
A3.2–“cateringstaffshallbeproperlytrainedorinstructedfortheirpositions”,andguidelinesinB3.2.

2.2 Learningobjectives
The objective of this distance course is to give the Trainee an introduction to hazards involved in
working in a galley and associated spaces and the precautions necessary to avoid them. It will also
give an introduction to the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness in the galley environment
