Bharatnet, the world’s largest rural broadband project implemented to


provide broadband connectivity to 2.5 lakh villages across India. The project
was launched in October 2011. It is a highly scalable network infrastructure
accessible on a non-discriminatory basis, to provide on-demand, affordable
broadband connectivity.

Objective: improve telecom services in rural and remote areas of country ..

Nodal ministry: For an implementation of the project is Ministry of communication

Funding: It is being funded by universal service obligation fund

 The project is a center states collaboration project

 States are contributing free rights of way for establishing the optical fiber network

The project was divided into two phases:

Phase-1: completed in December 2017, which projected to 1 lakh broadband


connectivity to gram-panchayat

Phase-2: which will be completed in march 2020, targeted to completed remaining


gram-panchayat

Till 27 March 2020,

 Bharatnet connect around 1.5 lakh gram-panchayat with optical fiber connection

 total optical fiber cable laid down is around 4.32 lakh km

 6,000 crore will be allocated for the BharatNet programme for year 2020-21
Benefits:

1) The bharatnet project would reduce the cost of broadband in India

2) The project would have adavantage like easy maintenance, fast implementation and
utilization of present power line infrastructure

3) The bharatnet project would provide a boost to the economy and would generate
employment during the rollout of the project

4) It will help in expansion of government’s initiative such as Make In India, Startup


India and Stand up India
