LAB ACTIVITY

VOLCANIC ASH IN MICROSCOPE

A. OBJECTIVES
To examine what is really inside the volcanic ash and what it looks like up

close.
B. MATERIALS
Microscope, microscope slides, ash fall, gloves

C. PROCEDURES
1. wear gloves and put a few ash falls in the microscope slide

2. look in the microscope and try to find what the ashes really look like.

D. RESULT

Volcanic ash consists of tiny, jagged particles of rock, minerals and

volcanic glass. These fragments range in size from 0.00004 inches (0.001

mm) to 0.08 inches (2 mm), roughly the diameter of a grain of rice.

Volcanic ash is hard and, due to each particle's jagged form, abrasive to

the touch. The exact mineral makeup of the ash depends on what

minerals were present in the magma.

E. CONCLUSION
Volcanic ash can be a serious side effect of

volcanic eruptions. Ash clouds rain down on

surrounding areas, sometimes coating the earth

in feet of ash. We should always be alert and

aware of what is happening because ash falls

are dangerous. So small yet so dangerous VOLCANIC ASH IN MICROSCOPE

because it can harm your lungs and can also be

the cause of your death. In conclusion,

we must be careful at all times

especially when it comes to

volcanic ashes.
