Hazards
LAB REPORT NO 4

REG NO: 2020-MIN-22 | APPLIED GEOLOGY LAB | 09-NOV-2020

OBJECTIVES:

 Be able to identify, interpret and classify the origin of igneous rocks textures and
classify igneous rocks on the basis of their mineralogical properties and composition.
 Apply the knowledge of igneous rocks textures, minerals , mafic color index ,
Bowen’s Reaction series and the origin of igneous rocks samples
 Interpret how lava volcanoes and also infer how the origin of igneous rocks bodies on
aerial photographs and geological maps.

ACTIVITIES:
 ACTIVITY 5.1: Glassy and vesicular texture of igneous rock
 ACTIVITY 5.2: Crystalline texture of igneous rocks
 ACTIVITY 5.3: Rock analysis, Classification and Texture Interpretation
 ACTIVITY 5.4: Thin section analysis an Bowen’s Reaction series\
 ACTIVITY 5.5: Igneous Rock Worksheet( for hand samples)
 ACTIVITY 5.6: Molding Lava Behavior and Volcanic Landforms
 ACTIVITY 5.7: Infer the geological history of ship rock, New Mexico
 ACTIVITY5.8: infer the geological history of Southeastern Pennsylvania

STUDENT MATERIAL:
 Eraser
 Pencil
 Chart for visual estimation of percentage
 Magnifying glass
 Collection of igneous rocks

PROCEDURE:
 First of all recorded the rock’s identification number.
 Estimated the rock mafic color index (MCI) using visual table from figure5.2.
 Then identified the minerals as phaneteric and pegmatite rocks.
 Visually estimated the abundance of each sample given.
 Then texture was described looking on rock.
 Rock’s name was determined.
 Described how the rock may have formed.
