DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY- PART 1 New Lesson

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Good morning class!” “Good morning sir…!”

“How are you all doing today?” “We’re all good sir…!”
(One student will lead the prayer)
“Okey.. Let us pray first…”

(Checking of attendance)
(the students will raise their hands and say present if the teachers
…say present if you are around…
call their names)
“As what we have seen there are a lot rocks
that are spreading in our surrounding …but did
you know that these rocks are actually
different from each other or is actually have
different kinds? Now, in today’s lesson we will
be discussing the different kinds of rock , as
well as its characteristics and classification.”

PREPARATION Communicate Learning Objectives

Motivation:
Let students classify the different types of rock and its meaning.

METAMORPHIC ROCK

SEDIMENTARY ROCK
IGNEOUS ROCK

PRESENTATION
Discussion with the aid of a PowerPoint Presentation

Igneous Rocks

- are formed from the solidification of molten rock material.

(Students listen attentively)

Basic types and its examples
Intrusive igneous rocks crystallize below Earth's surface,
and the slow cooling that occurs there allows large
crystals to form.
- Examples of intrusive igneous rocks are diorite,
gabbro, granite, pegmatite, and peridotite.

Extrusive igneous rocks erupt onto the surface, where

they cool quickly to form small crystals. Some cool so
quickly that they form an amorphous glass.
- Examples of extrusive igneous rocks are andesite,
basalt, dacite, obsidian, pumice, rhyolite, scoria,
and tuff.

How can you identify an igneous rock?

1. Steps in Identification:
2. Determine the color (indicates mineral composition)
3. Determine the texture (indicates cooling history)
4. Phaneritic = large grains.
5. Aphanitic = small grains (too small to identify with the naked
eye)
6. Porphyritic = fine grains mixed with larger grains.
7. Vesicular = holes.
8. Glassy = glass-like.

Metamorphic Rocks

- Metamorphic rocks have been modified by heat, pressure,

and chemical processes, usually while buried deep below
Earth's surface. Exposure to these extreme conditions has
altered the mineralogy, texture, and chemical composition of
the rocks.

Basic types and its examples

9. Foliated metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, phyllite,
schist, and slate have a layered or banded appearance
that is produced by exposure to heat and directed
pressure.
10. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks such as hornfels,
marble, quartzite, and novaculite do not have a layered
or banded appearance.

How can you identify a metamorphic rock?

- First, we are going to handle each type of metamorphim -
hydrothermal, contact, Barrovian, blueschist, eclogite. -
separately. The advantage to this is that at the level we do it
some types of metamorphism are pretty simple:
Eclogite, . . . produces the rock eclogite.
Contact, . . . produces the rocks hornfels and marble.
Blueschist, . . . produces the rock blueschist.
Hydrothermal, . . . produces rocks such as pegmatite,
serpentinite, and soapstone.

Sedimentary Rocks

-Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of

sediments. There are three basic types of sedimentary rocks.

Basic types and its examples

Clastic sedimentary rocks such as breccia,

conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale are
formed from mechanical weathering debris.

Chemical sedimentary rocks, such as rock salt, iron ore,

chert, flint, some dolomites, and some limestones, form
when dissolved materials precipitate from solution.

Organic sedimentary rocks such as coal, some

dolomites, and some limestones, form from the
accumulation of plant or animal debris.

How can you identify a metamorphic rock?

-Sedimentary rock is classified into two groups based on how
they form. They are clastic and chemical.

-Clastic sedimentary rock is formed as bits of weathered rock

become cemented together. Because all kinds of rock are
subject to weathering many different minerals can make up this
group of rocks. Clays and quartz are the most
common.Common rocks are conglomerate (with rounded
clasts),breccia (with angular
clasts),sandstone,siltstone,mudstone,shale etc..

-Chemical sedimentary rocks form from dissolved minerals that

are precipitated or separated from water. This happens most
frequently when water evaporates leaving the minerals behind.
You can see this process taking place in your own home. The
white deposits that form around the faucets in your bathroom
or kitchen are from minerals left behind as water evaporates
eg. fossiliferrous limestone,chalk,chert,gypsum,rock salt etc..

-Biologic sedimentary rocks are which form as the result of the

accumulation of organic material or biologic activity. Coal is
usually obvious to most students even though few people seem
to have ever actually examined it up close. The dark brown to
black color is the most obvious charateristic. Coquina and
limestone are both composed of calcite . Coquina is composed
almost entirely of shell or fossil fragments. Limestone may or
may not contain fossils fragments. Both will react to HCl.
Limestone containing fossils is referred to as fossiliferous
limestone.
APPLICATION / PRACTICE

(Students perform the activity)

ACTIVITY:
The students will be grouped into three. Each of the groups will be picking pictures inside the box randomly.
After that, they will present it to the class and identify as to what kind of rock it is in terms of colors,
appearance and characteristics.
