Multiply/Divide by 1000

Rules

To multiply by 1000 move the digits three places to the left.

To divide by 1000 move the digits three places to the right.

Note

The decimal point separates whole numbers from decimal fractions ie 4700 is the same as
4700.0 (4700 is the whole number; there is no decimal fraction).

Examples

47 × 1000 = 47,000

4700 ÷ 1000 = 4.7

23 ÷ 1000 = 0.023

Now try these;

Exercise 1

1. 3 × 1000 2. 48 × 1000 3. 392 × 1000

4. 123 × 1000 5. 4236 × 1000 6. 3925 × 1000

7. 6235 ÷ 1000 8. 9168 ÷ 1000 9. 3156 ÷ 1000

10. 948 ÷ 1000 11. 743 ÷ 1000 12. 158 ÷ 1000

13. 97 ÷ 1000 14. 56 ÷ 1000 15. 15 ÷ 1000

Factors, multiples and prime numbers

6 × 5 = 30

6 is a factor of 30 i.e. 6 divides into 30 exactly,

30 is a multiple of 6 i.e. 6 multiplies to 30 exactly.

Exercise 2

1. 7 × 8 = 56

What are the two factors of 56 in this multiplication?

2. 4×2=8

8 is a multiple of which two whole numbers?

3. 2 × 6 = 12

What are the two factors of 12 in this multiplication?

Can you think of two more factors of 12 i.e. two numbers that you multiply together to get 12.

That’s right 3 and 4 are also factors of 12.

4. 12 is a multiple of which numbers?

Now lets look at 7 and 11. Do they have factors? The only numbers that divide into 7 are 7
and 1. If a number can only be divided by 1and itself it is know as a prime number. 11 is also
a prime number.

5. What are the other primes numbers between 11 – 20?
