CVP68 - MINI PROJECT

SYNOPSIS
Title of the project: Analysis and Design of Multistoried Frame.
As per the suggestions of our project guide we have selected the above mentioned topic for
Mini Project. In this project we are analysing and designing a G+3 Multistoried Residential
Building. Our objective is to learn how to calculate the loads coming on the structure,
analysis of the structure and to design various structural members in order to sustain these
loads.

Multi Storied Frame: A multistoried building is a Framed Structure that contains two or
more floors between the ground level and the topmost level of the structure. The construction
of multistoried building aims to increase the floor area of the building without increasing the
area of land, the building is built on. Hence saving the land and making the economic
construction. These multistoried buildings are the framed structures having the combination
of slab, beam, column and various structural elements to resist the loads due to gravity, lateral
loads and various other loads that act on the structure. Then frames so analysed and designed
are recommended for the suitable construction.

Loads Acting on Structures:

Structures are designed to withstand various types of loads. The various types loads expected
on a structure are as follows:

 Dead Loads: Dead loads are due to self weight of the structure. These are permanent
loads which are always present. Dead load depends upon the unit weight of the
material. Dead load includes the self weight of walls, floors, beams, columns, etc. and
also permanent fixtures present in the structure. IS 875-1987, Part-1 Specifies the unit
weights of all the construction materials to be constructed for designing the structural
members.
 Live loads: Live loads on floors and roofs consist of all the loads which are
temporarily placed on the structure. For example, Loads of people, furniture, machine
etc. These loads keep on changing from time to time. They are also called Imposed
Loads. Various types of imposed loads coming on the structure are given in IS 875-
1987, Part-2.
 Wind Loads: The force exerted by the horizontal component of wind is to be
considered in the design of buildings. It depends upon the velocity of wind. Shape and
size of building. The method of calculating wind loads on the structure is given in IS
875-1987, Part-3.
 Snow Loads: The buildings which are located in the region where snow fall is very
common, are to be designed for snow loads. The code of Practice IS 875-1987, Part-4,
deals with the snow loads on the roofs for the buildings.
 Earthquake Loads: Earthquake loads depend upon the place where the building is
located. AS per IS 1893-2002, Part-1, (General Provision for Buildings), India is
divided into four seismic zones. The code gives recommendations for earthquake
resistant design of structures.

Here in this project we are considering the live loads (imposed loads) and dead load (self
weight), for the analysis and design. We are using Staad Pro and ETabs for the analysis of the
structural frame. We are designing the various structural members such as slabs, beams,
columns, stairs, footing etc., which form a multistoried frame. The structural members are
designed as per Indian Standard Specifications which are as follows:

1) IS 456-2000 (Plain and Reinforced Concrete Code of Practice)

2) SP 16 (Design Aids for Reinforced Concrete)
3) IS 875-1987 (Code of Practice for Design Loads)
a. Part-1 (Dead Loads)
b. Part-2 (Live Loads)
4) SP 34 (Handbook on Concrete Reinforcement and Detailing)

Outcome of the project:

 The analysis and design of various structural elements will be presented in detail.

 Details of reinforcement required for the construction of structural elements will be

provided in detailed drawings.
