Assignment 1-Design and tech projects

Successful project

Pocket- Phone stabilizer at its lightest and most affordable

It is a phone stabilizer that supports all major-sized phones and that fits in the user’s pocket.
Consequently, it highlights the fact that while the rest of phone stabilizers are difficult to carry
around by being too big and heavy, Pocket offers a unique experience by being weightless which
makes it accessible to accompany the user everywhere.
It is more affordable than the rest of similar devices on the market and it is also delivered by free
shipping worldwide.
This project is a successful one because it exceeded by far its initial pledge of 5.000 $, thus
reaching 64.535 $ and still having 19 days to go. Its success lies in the fact that it has a good
presentation video which is backed by the features of the device that manage to differentiate it
amongst other similar devices. Being more portable and affordable than other similar devices
contributes to the positioning of the product, mainly the idea that phone stabilizers should be
accessible to everyone.

Unsuccessful project

mIoTa- the ‘makers Internet of Things adapter”

It is a gadget meant to be used for DIY projects that require automation, targeting people who do
not have the technical skills to create such a project. Although the inventors point out the idea
that the Internet of Things is already part of our living and all our projects should be adapted to
this new reality, it contains too many specific technical details.
First of all, one reason why it only had one backer (initially pledging to 15.529 $ and reaching
only 1$) is the presentation video. It does not have a background voice or any kind of indications
of what makes this product different and what specific needs it addresses. Secondly, the product
promotion campaign provides too much in depth of technical details, which are not easily to
understand by a potential client who does not have a technical background. All these make the
product unappealing and consequently it does not serves its initial purpose of addressing ‘Do it
yourself’ type of projects for people who lack technical skills.
