Artifact Description: Truss Bridge - Create a 2-D model of a truss bridge
What you learned/overcame: I’m not too great at coming up with creative designs
on my own, so I went with a simple design. Even though I kept it pretty
straightforward it was still challenging for me. I think what I struggled with most was
trying to make sure it is symmetrical. I played around with the line and shape tools
quite a bit, and I used the triangle shape tool to make sure my triangles were all the
same in my design. I also figured out that if I started the shape tool right above the
bridge's base it made the base look thicker which I thought was a nice touch. Holding
the shift button while drawing my lines made it much easier to ensure my lines were
perfectly straight as well. After this project I would like to keep trying out new things
and continue practicing with the Windows paint application.
National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS)•S Addressed:
Standard #4 : Innovative Designer - 4b) Students select and use digital tools to plan
and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.
Application of Skills Learned for the Future: This project would be a great way for
students to learn how to use basic drawing tools in programs like Windows paint. It
would allow them to see how lines come together to form shapes and designs. Not
only would this project allow for creativity, it would also teach students basic
geometry and physics. It would be interesting for students to be able to test their
bridges and compare with each other how much weight they are able to handle
without breaking. Perhaps you could even have a contest to see whose design is the
most durable. Besides a bridge perhaps students could design their own unique
castles to learn how to manipulate drawing objects on screen.
