Where are you currently working or studying?
I am working in some caol mines as an engineer in Samangan and it is a governmental sector.
If you are currently working, please provide brief details of your post grade and main responsibilities.
I am working as an engineer in coal mines. I make the plans of extraction and take care of envrironmental issues. I am also
responsible for guiding other engineers ans geologic students who visit the coal mines for field trips. I must illustrate the situation
of mines, the volume of extrcation, environmental protection and work safety.
If you are currently studying, what qualification do you expect to obtain, and when do you expect to obtain it?
my university session was finished in March 2009 and since that time i have been working on my dissertation and it is an

Title and Name: Mr Omid Bahadoryan
Position: Engineer
I was chosen as an engineer in coal mine in a small district named Dareh Yousuf. First time that I closed to mine, I noticed,
smoke was emitting from pick of mountain. I heard that one section of coal was fired four years ago and reason wasn’t clear.
Since then, coal has been burning and nobody was able to extinguish. Many problems were following. Firstly, economically,
millions of tons of coal were burning and nobody cares. Secondly, Afghanistan’s national treasury was disappearing and
damaging environment, natural habitat, animals, and flora. Thirdly, people living in vicinity were suffering from ash furthermore
negative effects on vegetation, agriculture, and drinking water and etc. I thought we could extinguish the fire by some substances
like water, gas but it was completely impossible because there wasn’t any way into that area. Therefore I used another method. I
thought, if we blocked all tunnels, we would stop entering air into tunnels and when there is no air, the burning will be stopped. It
was very huge work because numbers and size of tunnels were many. But I decided doing this because the accident was the
worst catastrophic event I have ever seen and had much harm. I spoke with all people in village. Actually, speaking and
convincing everyone weren’t that easy as I thought. But insisting and perseverance finally paid off. People and miners and I
worked together more than 10 days and eventually we blocked all the ways. After two days the smoke got thinner and thinner as
disappeared. The consequences were completely positive. Firstly, no damage to environment, plants, water, animals and more
importantly did something to lessen global warming. Secondly, disappearing one of the important non-renewable natural
resources was stopped and thirdly, our extraction process got easy because of not being warm inside tunnels.
My professional goals include earning my master’s degree in environmental geology as well as working in governmental and
non-governmental sector. Concerning governmental section I‘m particularly interested in a position in the ministry of mines. This
section needs professional people who’ve hardly studied all the stages and have much experience in geology, mining and
environment and moreover management and leadership skills. Accountable and transparent government is built on the functional
national administration and that’s why I decided working for the government. By taking a job in government I can make effective
innovations according to my experience because I‘m certain, students with greatest potential and passion make the biggest
difference in our society and on the world. With this grant I‘ll be prepared for my professional goals in education and future work in
ministry. Moreover I’ll use these methods and knowledge for my country to handle our natural resources, rural and urban planning
and pollution. My comprehensive decision-making and managerial abilities and leadership skills will be improved. This
qualification allows me to play an increasingly larger management role in the government for paving the way towards sustainable
development in my country.
The Chevening program provides a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge related to sustainable development,
conservation of natural resources and waste management. There are many problems in Afghanistan which should be solved and I
hope when I return I‘ll become a proficient man, capable of applying my knowledge and experiences in my country and solve its
problems and I’m sure I‘ll do many things for my country because I’ve confidence that the most effective people are the most
educated and dedicated ones. By continuing my major I’ll reach this goal. We Afghans are not poor, just we don’t have tools to
use and these tools are professional people who studied and worked efficiently in their majors and offer their knowledge and
experiences to serve people. It’s my slogan that It‘s only Afghans that can give Afghanistan the things it needs.
