WRITING: COVID-19 (400 WORDS)

This surreal situation we are living has been caused by our excess of confidence in our
invulnerability and the advances in science. Being true that our knowledge in medicine has
advanced a lot since the last pandemics, we would have been better in the last few months if
we had been more cautious. For instance, we could have provided hospitals with more
protective equipments just in case some tragedy like this would happen. It is also clear that if
we had paid more attention to how other countries, like China or Italy, were doing, we would
have acted quickly and a lot of trouble would have been eluded. Because if you prevent and
anticipate to this kind of problems, you don’t suffer the same consequences as if you had
remained immutable from the beginning, so we have a lot to learn for more pandemics in the
future (let’s hope that in the distant future, for humanity’s sake).

The governments all around the world have tackled this problem confining people in
their homes and prohibiting the social habits by which it is likelier that the transmission and
contagion of the covid-19 will take place. This has helped contain the contagion, for sure. Once
we regain control of the pandemic we should get back to normal in an orderly manner,
because if we are able to reactivate the economy again, we will fare better when the world
economy begins to show symptoms of being approaching another economic crisis.

For the future world leaders, it is of paramount importance that they take seriously the
importance of being able to implement the adequate public health measures in a similar
situation. If they don’t do this, failure is guaranteed, and a lot of deaths will ensue. For this
reason, they will need to be very conscious of the fact that no factors should be involved in the
process of decision-making other than those related to the well-being of the population,
setting aside political considerations and other compromises that involve interests different
than those of the general population. If they behave in a different way, the world will suffer
needlessly.

Finally, it will also be essential that people learn to be respectful with each other,
adapting their behavior to what is precised by the authorities, and learning to be more flexible.
If you are able to adapt, problems are less harmful, so it surely pays off.
