VI. Abstraction

Summary is also called a synopsis

Composing a synopsis is essential as it will
demonstrate your understanding of the play.
But how are we going to write a good
synopsis?

Here are the guidelines in writing a good

synopsis:

1. BEGIN WITH TIME AND PLACE

- Time and place should be
indicated at the beginning of the
story.

Example: Once upon a time, an ongoing

argument between the Capulets and the
Montagues breaks out again on the streets of
Verona. Both sides are warned by Prince
Escalus that they must not disturb the peace
again, on pain of death.

2. DESCRIBE THE MAIN CHARACTERS

- A brief description of main
characters should be given as they
appear in the story.

Example: Romeo, love-sick for Rosaline, is

comforted by his friend Benvolio. Capulet
tells Paris that he may not marry his
daughter Juliet until she is older.

3. FOLLOW THE SAME ORDER OF THE

PLAY
- A good synopsis should be told in
the same order of the play, and
end at the play’s conclusion.

4. LIMIT YOUR WORDS

- The synopsis must be no longer
than 250 words.

5. USE APPROPRIATE TENSE AND POINT

OF VIEW
- The story must be told in the
present tense and in the third
person.

6. FORGET THE DIALOGUE

- When telling a story, the dialogue
should not be included.
