1 Introduction
The Middleton, Wisconsin fire testing laboratory of Intertek Testing Services NA
(Intertek)/Warnock Hersey conducted a Vertical Fire Test for Franklin International. The test
sample(s) were received at the laboratory in June 2016 in good condition. This report gives the
results of the evaluation of a fire resistance property of a finger jointed stud wall. The test
results described in this report are limited to the submitted items.

The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, 2015 edition modified by ASTM
D7470-08 (2015) for a loaded wall design. ASTM E119 conditions of acceptance for
temperature and passage of flame or hot gases are to be recorded and reported but are not
acceptance criteria for the end-jointed lumber adhesive qualification and the ASTM E119 hose
stream test is not required per ASTM D7470. Acceptance criteria for ASTM D7470 per section
9.1 is as follows, the wall assembly shall sustain the applied load for a minimum of 60 min,
rounded to the nearest minute.

The test was conducted at neutral pressure in accordance with ATM E119.

2 Test Samples And Assembly Description

Details of the test assemblies were verified by Intertek personnel at the laboratory and the construction
details are in the project file.
Assembly
Wall Size/Configuration 10’0" wide x 10’0" high.
Wall Type The wall was assembled with Southern Pine No. 2 lumber
manufactured by Gilman Building Products and graded as
SPIB #2. The vertical studs were finger jointed with 9 fingers
in each joint. The joint length was 10-11 mm and oriented
horizontally. The horizontal lumber was solid Southern Pine
No 2. The maximum stud moisture content was 15%. The
frame is 10x10 ft, 16 in. o.c. vertical studs, 2 bottom and 1
top plate. The vertical studs were spaced resulting in 9 studs.
Adhesive Franklin Advantage EP-950A emulsion w/ Hardener 200 MDI
(EPI).

Sheathing (1) Layer of 5/8” Type X Drywall each side with all joints and
fastener heads covered with compound and joints taped.
Insulation 3 ½” x 16” 2.5 pcf density. (Roxul AFB)
Fasteners Wood to Wood Maze 16d (3-1/2 inch) common nails.
Drywall to wood 2-1/4 in Type W drywall screws 12” O.C.

3 Test Installation and Procedures

The test assembly was installed per the installation instructions per ASTM D7470 in a fire rated
wall constructed in a furnace frame. Studs were nailed together with Maze 16d common nails.
Drywall was screwed to the studs with 2 ¼” Type W screws 12” O.C.

After positioning the assembly frame over the furnace opening, the burners were ignited and a
timer started. Temperatures within the furnace were monitored using thermocouples and the
data recorded. The burners were controlled to keep the furnace temperatures within the
allowable limits specified in the test standards. These temperature data are included in this
report.

Periodic observations were made of the exposed and unexposed surfaces of the test assembly
during the fire endurance test. These observations are included in this report.

Pressure taps were installed through the furnace wall adjacent to the test assembly at two
heights (top and 40” above the sill) to measure furnace pressure. The neutral pressure plane
within the furnace was maintained at the top of the wall as specified in the test standards. This
pressure data is included in this report.

The superimposed load applied to this wall was 21,663 lbf, equal to 1,895 lb/per stud. The
calculation for this can be found in Figure 7.

The following test equipment was used to collect and monitor test conditions.
