Rebecca Hughes – July 8, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians of ______________,

My name is Ms. Hughes and I am so incredibly thrilled to be part of the 8th grade team teaching
Algebra this year! 8th grade is an exciting time, and I want us to have a strong and successful
year. I want to take this time to introduce myself and talk about some of our classroom
procedures
I grew up here in Austin – I went to Austin Community College, and then later moved to San
Marcos and got my Bachelors from Texas State University. I have worked all over Texas, but I
absolutely love Austin and am so glad I moved back. When I’m not at school, I love being
outside! My hobbies include birdwatching, kayaking, roller skating, and hiking. I have a cat
named Socrates who loves to help me grade papers!
Algebra is an important class – not only do you need it to pass high school, but math skills help
strengthen your mind and improve your logical reasoning. Algebra teaches us many things – to
keep things equal, to work to prove ourselves, and that most problems have a solution if you just
keep working on it.
I want to highlight a couple of our most important procedures –
1. Google Classroom – Our class will have a virtual component to help students and parents
stay organized. Homework, videos, test reviews, announcements, and more can be found
on this page. Parents/guardians will have access is they provide their email address
below.

2. Homework – Each lesson builds on the last lesson, so it’s important to get practice and
repetition to build up your math muscles! Homework will be assigned every day Monday
through Thursday. It should take no more than 30 minutes and will have optional
corresponding videos for help available on our Google Classroom page.

3. Group Work – Studies have shown that students gain and retain more math information
when they work collaboratively with their peers. Our class will rely heavily on working
in small groups, so students must treat each other respectfully and work responsibly with
others.

I will be available through email at rebecca.hughes@kipptexas.org if you would ever like to

schedule a conference, or you can reach me at 512-867-5309 and leave a voicemail and I will
call you back. I am looking forward to a great year! Please sign and return the bottom portion by
Monday, August 15th to show you’ve read these procedures.
