Accuracy and Operating Requirements

A variable area flowmeter is specified for a defined set of fluid Pressure Shocks

information should be considered: Fig. 5: Magnetic Separator (DN 15–DN 25 [1/2” - 1”])
• Select a flowmeter with the lowest possible pressure drop.
• Minimize the pipeline length between the flowmeter and the
closest up- or downstream throttling location.
• Increase the operating pressure, and consider its effect on the
flowrate values due to the change in the gas density at the new
operating conditions.

Flow Range Tables, Food Industry Fittings

The more stringent requirements for the food and beverage
industries relative to biological cleanability have resulted in a spe-
cial design with threaded connections per DIN 11851.
All fluid wetted parts must be welded pore free and polished.
Gaps or other dead spaces may not be present. The instrument
is suitable for cleaning and sterilization with steam, acids and
alkalis. In addition the instrument is suitable for CIP-Cleaning.

1) The flowrate end value can be selected anywhere between these lim-
its. The flow range is 10:1.
Example: Flowmeter end value 12 m3/h Water, flow range for the in-
strument 1.2 to 12 m3/h Water.
2) Conversion factor from l/h Water to m3/h Air at 0 °C and 1013 mbar
= 0.03
3) Viscosity Influence Number (VIN).
If the calculated VIN value is less than or equal to the VIN value listed
in the Flow Range Table, then there is no viscosity influence on the
measured values.

( ρs – 1 ) ⋅ 1
VIN = η ⋅ --------------------------------------
( ρ s1 – ρ 1 ) ⋅ ρ 1

η = Dyn. viscosity of the fluid [mPa s]

ρs = Density of the float from Table (ρ = 8.02 g/cm3)
ρs1 = Density of the float that is actually being used.
ρ1 = Density of the fluid.
If the calculated value is higher than the listed VIN value, then the
flowmeters are provided with a scale at our factory which takes into
account the viscosity of the fluid.
4) The listed pressure drop values are based on the listed flow range
end value.
5) The minimum required pressure (abs) required to prevent compres-
sion oscillations (float bounce) in the meter pipe. The specifications
with and without dampers are based on average installation condi-
tions.
The values could be less for favorable installations. The pressure
drop in such instances must then be considered as the minimum re-
quire pressure. For unfavorable installation conditions it may be pos-
sible that the actual values may be higher than those listed.
6) Damping with a twisted pole guide
For meter sizes DN 15 and DN 25 [1/2” and 1”].
7) Cylinder/piston damping.
For meter sizes DN 15 to DN 80 [1/2” to 3”].

Indicator with Electrical Converter Communication HART-Protocol

w/wo Display AM54_31/AM54_32 The HART-Protocol provides digital communication between a
process control system/PC, Handheld terminal and the
FAM5400. All settings and values − such as meter location
parameters − can be transmitted from the converter to the pro-
cess control system or PC. In the reverse direction the converter
configuration can be changed.
The digital communication utilizes an AC signal superimposed on
the current output (4−20 mA) which does not affect any instru-
ments connected to the output. The program SMART-VISION
can be used to configure the converter.
SMART-VISION is a universal communication software for intelli-
gent field instruments which uses different communication paths
for enabling data exchange between a complete field instrument
palette. The principal applications are for parameter display, con-
figuration, diagnostics, recording and data management for all
intelligent field instruments, which satisfy the communication
requirements.
The following communication possibilities or communication
paths can be realized:

• Information for grounding the housing

The correct grounding of the AM54-housing is essential for proper
functioning of the instrument as well as for assuring its safety.
For the ground connection between the grounding screw and the
protective earth (PA) a copper wire with a size at least AWG 10 is to
be used.
• Information for the line connection leads
If regional or national codes do not specify otherwise, the line supply
leads are to be size AWG 20.
• Information for explosion protected Installations
For AM54-Instruments with explosion protection installed in hazard-
ous locations Group A and B a flame arrestor must be installed within
46 cm of the instrument.
• Instrinsically Safe Control Drawing (SD-10-4074)
For intrinsically safe installations the AM54 must be installed as shown
in the Intrinsically Safe Control Drawing (see Fig. 26) . The drawing is Gasket Sleeve Coupling nut
also included in the documentation shipped with the instrument.
