FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

MFA 10603 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Semester 2 Session 2019/2020

Project Instruction

The significant increase in flooding that has been seen over the last few years is largely
due to changing physical characteristics of the hydrological system caused by human
activities: continued development of already densely populated flood plains,
encroachment on flood‐prone areas, destruction of forests and hill slopes
development. While urbanisation has increased the potential for hydrological
alterations and channel disturbances along streams by the expansion of built up areas,
and modification of natural channel through channelisation processes.

Flood losses are high, thus, the government appoints your company to seek for a
comprehensive solutions to overcome this issue. As an engineer, you are required to
provide a holistic and comprehensive engineered solutions. There are a few
components that need to be included in the report. The required components for the
conceptual solutions are:

1. Literature review on floods - find recent high impact journal papers

2. Background of study area - include images or photos (if available)
3. History of floods
4. Causes and effects of flood
5. Identification of flood area
6. Propose flood mitigation plan
(a) Structural approach
(b) Non-structural approach

2. Report Writing:

2.1 Format of report:

(a) Project report should be typed with 1.5 lines spacing, in 12-pt Times New
Roman.
(b) The report should not exceed 20 pages (including photos). All pages
(excluding cover and list of content) should be numbered (centered at the
bottom of the page).
2.2 Prepare a short video presentation to explain your work - There is no
restrictions on the style of the video.
2.3 Report and video presentation need to be submitted in soft copy.

Note: Please refer to your lecturer if any doubt arises during project implementation.
Be creative in reporting the project.
