Management Practices of
Instructional Routines & Materials
An Inclusive Classroom Environment includes access to learning goals through
instructional scaffolds, differentiated resources and frequent and formative feedback.

Instructional routines and materials are needed to help with the structure of your
Instructional Time. Instructional Time is broken up into 4- categories:

1. Allocated Time: The total time for instruction and student learning
2. Instructional Time: The time the teacher is actively teaching
3. Engaged Time: The time students are involved in a task
4. Academic Learning Time: The time teachers use to prove that students
learned the content or mastered the skill

Physical Classroom Environment

“A physical classroom environment that is universally designed for learning

plans promotes inclusion by providing meaningful access to learning for all
students.”

UDL or Universal Design for Learning- accounts for predictable

learner variability in engagement (multiple types of seating, different
groupings, etc.), representation (visuals that include words and pictures,
directions delivered using verbal and nonverbal cues, making the learning
goals visible, etc.), expression (learning spaces with choices of tools,
integrate digital resources, etc).

When the physical space is aligned to the instructional goals and routines,
students feel welcomed and supported in the classroom.
UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Considerations

★ Student & Teacher access to materials and exit doors

★ Student ability to move within the classroom
★ Teacher’s ability to move throughout the classroom
★ Teacher’s ability to see all of the students and be seen by
all
★ The type of engagement you want students to use
★ The amount of structure your students need in order to
learn
“Top 5 Tips for Learning Environments”
1. Support Relevant Goal Setting
2. Communicate High Expectations for ALL and
Recognize Variability
3. Promote Disciplinary Expertise
4. Focus on the Process, Not just the Outcome
5. Guide Self- Reflections

In your break out rooms you will read over your number/ topic- we will
come back whole group to teach/ discuss with your peers important take-aways- How
does UDL connect to these 5 Tips?

Student Centered Spaces
You want to create student- centered spaces in your classroom that:

● Develop a sense of individual and group ownership of the room or

virtual setting
● Actively engage students in the learning- enjoy the learning
● Work collaboratively
● Move about responsibly and independently
● Value and care for materials and equipment

(Lemov):

Chapter 6, 7 & 10-

Pacing, Building Ratio

Through Questioning &
Systems and Routines
Session 4 Reading: Pacing, Building Ratio through Questioning &
Systems and Routines/ Teach Like a Champion
Change the Pace: Establish a productive pace in your classroom- create fast or slow
moments in a lesson
All Hands: Manage and vary the ways that you use to call on students- equity sticks, cold
call, by birthday, etc
Work the Clock: Time is your greatest resource as a teacher
Every Minute Matters: Respect you and your students time by using time wisely and
productively
Wait Time: Allow students time to think before answering
Threshold: Meet your students at the door, setting expectations before they enter the
classroom
Strong Start: A routine for students to enter the classroom and begin class
Rehearse and Reinforce until Excellence becomes habitual/ Do It Again: Give students
practice as they need it- not just doing something again: doing it better

Rehearsal Groups
You will work with your group in the asynchronous section to rehearse and record. Each member will take a turn
practicing. (You will work on your own first. In the group section in Blackboard you can communicate with your
team what time you will come together and who will send the zoom link & remember to set it to record/ or push
the record button).

You have groups created in Blackboard.

During the Asynchronous portion of the session, you and your group will need to complete an independent task and
then come together to record. The person with the closest birthday to June 22nd will be the lead for the week. The
lead will email the group to arrange the recording, record the rehearsal while in Zoom, and upload and share the
recording to Torsh. The recording will be shared with each of your group members and ME via Torsh. The lead will
change each week in order of the next birthday.

Purpose of Task: Work on becoming a No- Nonsense Nurturer/ An Effective Educator that not only TEACHES but
INSPIRES!

Practice how to break down a routine or procedure (entrance routine, passing

papers, transitions, dismissal) into explicit steps (MVPT directions, economy of
language, positive narration, be seen looking)
Possible Scenarios:
- It is 5 minutes until lunchtime. Give students directions for putting their
belongings away and moving to the door for lunch. If more than 5
students do not get ready the way you asked them to, have the whole
class return to their seats and repeat this process again.
- Class dismissal. How will you dismiss students? Give students
directions for what dismissal will look like. The last thing you want is
students dismissing themselves, hanging at the door or in the hallway
before the bell rings.
- Entrance routine: What will they do? (Ex. Grab their notebooks,
complete a do now, go straight to their seats, turn in homework)
Possible Behaviors for Off-Task Students
- When asked to get ready for lunch, sit unmoving or complain
loudly to your neighbor about what is for lunch that day. Spill
your notebook/ pencil on the floor and slowly pick up your
things up. Talk loudly when lining up.
- Students walk out of room before the dismissal bell rings
- Start running around in the room chasing a classmate or at
another student’s desk talking instead of completing the
entrance routine.

Artifacts for Key Assignment
Begin building your Portfolio/ Your Toolkit of Strategies/ Techniques-- Evidence of what you
have learned.

Be creative in thinking about the artifacts. Slide Deck: Slides to demonstrate the Key
Assignment Components- Include an explanation of each component, including how it was or will be
used and why it is important
*Cite Research when necessary
*Reflection is embedded in slide deck

Use high quality examples

Examples of Artifacts:
- Create voice level poster
- Scripts that you have created
- Attention Getter
- Video
- Photos

* On your solo teach days in the fall you will already have things created (in your toolbox).
* If you are not going to make them/ artifacts (home made) find things that you plan to use.
Key Assignment Reflection
Guiding questions for you

to think about and support responses:

1. The specific strategies from this course that you enacted in class
2. The outcome of those enactments (how did it go?)
3. Your Take-Aways (Glows, Grows, Wow Moments, Next Steps)
Key Assignment Upload
➔ Embed evidence of your Artifacts (photos, scripts,
screenshots, scans, etc.) in your slide deck/
presentation
➔ Embed your Reflection at the end of your slide deck/
Powerpoint (through text paste on the final slides)
➔ Convert your final presentation into a .pdf file
➔ Upload the final presentation to TK20 as a .pdf file
