EQUILIBRIUM
The condition in which the resultants of all forces acting on the body is zero.
In line with Newton’s First Law, rigid bodies considered in Statics are at rest.

Equations of Equilibrium
The two equations which are both necessary and sufficient for the
equilibrium of a rigid body, namely, ƩF = 0 and ƩM = 0.

ƩFx = 0
ƩFy = 0
ƩM = 0

Coplanar Force System
When the lines of action of a
set of forces lie in a single
plane is called coplanar force
system.

1. Coplanar - Collinear Force System
When the lines of action of all the forces of a system act along the same
line, this force system is called collinear force system.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 3

10 kN P 30 kN
1 2 3

Determine the Axial Force on Bar 2

Solution:
Apply the equation of equilibrium
Fx = 0 =
30 = P + 10
P = 20 kN

2. Coplanar - Concurrent Force System
The forces when extended pass through a single point and the point is called
point of concurrency. The lines of actions of all forces meet at the point of
concurrency.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 4
From the figure shown.

Given data:

a = 1 m., θ = 30˚, ß = 45˚

P1 = 1.8 kN, P2 = 0.9 kN,

P3 = 0.45 kN,
1. Determine the resultant of the three
forces P1, P2 and P3.
2. Determine the vertical reaction at B.
3. Determine the horizontal reaction at B. ENGR. JEREMIAS JR. YANG MARQUEZ
3. Coplanar - Parallel Force System
The lines of actions of all forces are parallel with each other.

ENGR. JEREMIAS JR. YANG MARQUEZ

SAMPLE PROBLEM 5
From the given sets of parallel forces shown.
1. Determine the resultant of the applied forces.
2. Determine the location of the resultant from the left support.
3. Determine the vertical reaction of the left support.

Coplanar - General Force System
The lines of actions of all forces do not have a definite pattern.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 7
A load W = 30 kN is lifted by a boom BCD making an angle, α = 60˚, from
the vertical axis. Neglect the weight of the boom.
1. Determine the angle ß
between the cables AC and AD.
2. Determine the horizontal
reaction at B.
3. Determine the tension in
the cable AC.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 8
A load W is to be lifted using the crane
which is hinged at B as shown in the
figure.
The value of x1 is 10 m., x2 is 8 m.
and h is 18 m. Neglecting the weight
of the crane.

be lifted if the maximum force of cable
AC is 50 kN.
