Lesson Idea Name: Animal Fun!

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Empowered Learner
Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating
competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:

iMovie

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) The technology is iMovie it has many different options to enhance
learning. It can provide visuals, animations, and audio for students. Keeping students engaged throughout the
material given.

Lesson idea implementation: Teacher will show the iMovie she created to class first. The students will sit
and watch the iMovie. The students will complete a worksheet after the iMovie is over. Once the students all
complete the worksheet the project be introduced. Then students will have a choice to pick their own animal
or plant to research. Students will find at least three things their plant or animals needs to survive. Students
will then go into iMovie and begin adding pictures. Once that is complete student will add audio to their
iMovie talking about their plant or animal. All together it should take about two days to complete depending
on the class and how much time is set aside for science. Students learning will be assessed by the iMovie they
have created. For my English learners, I will have cards with pictures of plants or animals and three things that
they need to survive. Therefore, those students will not need to research. However, they will be able to talk
about what they chose and show the pictures on iMovie. I will extend the student learning to a higher

learning level by not letting students just put their animal eats food but what kind and what kind of shelter
and why. The lesson will be concluded by letting students add their iMovie into drop box. Each student will
have a chance to watch what their peers created. As students are working the teacher will walk around to
answer any questions and assist as needed. The teacher will look over students notes as they research to
make sure they are understanding what they are looking for. The teacher will also go through each iMovie
and give students individual feedback on their work.
Importance of technology: Using a multimedia tool is critical to the project because it is more engaging for
the students. The students have an opportunity to share to the class what they have learned. Students also
get more information from their peers so everyone is learning more without just reading a book about it or
listing to the teach. The project could be completed without this technology. Students could just draw
pictures and create a few sentences to go along with it. However, students may lose interest if it is done that
way. Creativity and interested would be lost without using iMovie. PowerPoint could be used instead
because it has some of the same features.

Inspiration (optional): none

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some possible issues surrounding Internet safety would be students
suffering the web. I would provide website URLs for the students to use to locate their information. Also, I
would make sure students are only posting their work to the class not to the world. Therefor no extra
paperwork would need to be sent home to sign.

Reflective Practice: This activity could impact students learning by giving them more in-depth learning. To
further extend the lesson students could do one plant and one animal. That would make students understand
both topics fully or let students comment on each other’s work asking questions.
