CHUCHOTAGE

Chuchotage is a special type of simultaneous interpreting. The interpreter sits or

stands beside or behind the person or

persons who need (s) interpretation

and whispers the translation to the

client while the speaker continues. This

type of Simultaneous Interpreting does

not need equipment.

In conference or meetings is very common to use this kind of interpretation because

there are people of other languages, and since they are no the majority, they have

their own interpreter to translate all the information simultaneously. In this way the

speech is not interrupted or repeated later in another language, but the interpreter

whispers the interpretation to his client or small group of clients.

Characteristics

 The level of difficulty is important because the interpreter must be able to

inform his listener of everything that is being talking about without influencing

the course of the main communication.

 This type of interpretation is very characteristic in meetings in which the

number of speakers of another language is very low.

 The interpreter interpret for one or two participants.

 This interpretation is unidirectional, in other words, a person exposes an idea

to other people and they receiver it and there is no feedback.

  The interpreter is faced with the discomfort of an ergonomic position because

he has to sit for long periods, as well as the difficulty of concentrating in not

favorable conditions, overlapping voices and distractions, he cares the tone

of his voice so as not to disturb the receiver or the other people around him.
