FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT

LESSON: 6
OF A PRE-CAST SLAP ROAD GUTTER

Recall on formwork
6.1. Generalities
Formwork is a mould realized in order to give at the end, the shape of the object desired.
Reinforcement is a fashioning or tying of steel rod within the formwork in order to reinforce the
structure or to make it be more sustained. Formwork and reinforcement is executed according to
certain standards (norms).
6.2. Condition of good wooden formwork

Easy removal ;
Possibility of many uses ;
Solidity ;

6.3. PRACTICAL REALISATION OF FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT

6.3.1. Materials

Wooden board is usually used for formwork or the realization of the mould but a cutting list or
timbering slip is needed in order to describe the shape and size of each part of the element that
when put together or assemble make the mould. Good nails that assure solidity and easy removal
are also needed.

For reinforcement, steel iron, binding wire is needed and a reinforcement slip describes the shape
and length of different iron bar to put together in a form of a mesh.

6.3.2. Tools
For formwork work Saw, Tape, Builder’s square, straight-edge, Hammer are needed while for the
reinforcement work Hacksaw, Pliers, pincers, Griffe 10 mm

6.3.3. Order of realization

N° Order of task for Wooden formwork N° Order of task for Reinforcement

constitute the mould 2 constitute the mould
3 Joint the materials by nailing while Tie it in respect to the shape
3
respecting the condition of easy removal
4 Verify the dimensions and prepare the mould Put the reinforcement within the formwork

PROJECT:
FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT OF A
CONCRETE PRECAST SLAP FOR A ROAD GUTTER

I. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In other to complete the construction of the entrance road to GTHS Kumbo, the construction of 10
precast slaps for road gutter is to be done. The design of the precast slap as required by the engineering
consultant is presented in page 2/2.

II. MATERIALS AND TOOLS NEEDED

Materials Tools Manpower

Wooden Board of 3 cm x 8 cm Hammer
Steel HA10 Hacksaw, Pliers,
Reinforcement Area of work 1.20mx1.00m
pincers, Griffe 10 mm
Binding wire

III. WORK REQUIRED:

PART ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE ELEMENTS
1) Establish the cutting list for the formwork timber for a concrete block (timbering slip)
2) Establish the cutting details for the reinforcement of one concrete block.
PART TWO: REALISATION OF THE FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT
3) Realise the formwork.
4) Realise the reinforcement and place in the mould.
