LESSON: PITCH AND SIMPLE MELODIC SHAPES
Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Aurally identify melodic shapes as either rising, falling, remaining, or combinations
2. Write and sing melodic shapes through line notation
3. Relate visual imagery to melodic shapes
Key Vocabulary: Materials:
1. Pitch – highness or lowness of sound Computer or Cellphone
2. Pitch Shape – Rising and falling of sound

ENGAGE
Teacher will:
1. Initiate a singing introduction using Sol-Mi pattern
“Hello, Hello (Student Name)
Hello, Hello Louie
Go and greet somebody
I will greet somebody”
Respond by singing the next line of the song (highlighted in yellow) and greet somebody else
until everyone had a turn.
2. Play a warmup game “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Do the default action and ask students to
make their own unique action moving to the steady beat. Call somebody to lead. Students will
copy the action of whoever is leading.
3. Introduce the concept of high and low sound using the Sol-mi pattern used as an introduction
and pointing out parts of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” high-low pitch.
4. Pose the question “What are the pitch shapes?”

EXPLORE
Teacher will:
1. Play the video of “In the Jungle.”
2. Ask students to observe the movements of each animal
3. Play the video again but this time ask the students to observe the direction of each animal
sound.
4. Ask the students to relate the sound with the action.

EXPLAIN
Teacher will:
1. Ask students to stand up ang copy the direction of the animal actions while making their
sound.
2. Explain the different melodic shapes and draw them on the board.
ELABORATE
Teacher will:
1. Show the “As the Crow Flies” and ask students to trace the lines with their finger while
making the sound.
2. Ask students to draw on a paper the melodic shapes he will sing and show it on the camera.
This will help him identify who needs more assistance. Repeat the explanation if necessary.
3. Draw pitch shapes on the board and ask each student to sing them.
4. Assign a supplemental work/game which the student can play on his own

2. Ask students to sing the same sol-mi pattern as a goodbye song altering the words to
“ Bye, bye class
