INTERVIEWER: [00:00:00] So tell me and what is your current profession?

PARTICIPANT: [00:00:08] I'm a lawyer.

INTERVIEWER: [00:00:11] Are you studying or you just finish the study program of law?

PARTICIPANT: [00:00:18] Yes, I finished it four years ago. And then I became a lawyer one
year ago. Hmm.

INTERVIEWER: [00:00:28] It's Italian you're only native language.

PARTICIPANT: [00:00:33] Yeah, yes it is.

INTERVIEWER: [00:00:34] All right. What is your level of proficiency in English?

PARTICIPANT: [00:00:40] B2 Level I reached these when I was at school. So 10 years ago.

INTERVIEWER: [00:00:49] And for how long have you been studying English?

PARTICIPANT: [00:00:55] Sorry

INTERVIEWER: [00:00:55] for how yeah for how long have you been studying English?

PARTICIPANT: [00:01:01] for 10 years at school.

INTERVIEWER: [00:01:06] Right ten years. So from your previous experience. Can you please
describe a typical English lesson?

PARTICIPANT: [00:01:20] So at school we learn to read, listen and write in English. So we

were able to manage these different abilities.

INTERVIEWER: [00:01:36] anything you like or anything? Perhaps you didn't like about those
lessons.

PARTICIPANT: [00:01:42] I liked all things because I like studying English.

INTERVIEWER: [00:01:50] Okay, and what about the activities on itself when you say they
teach you to do, they give you some readings that give you some writing? How were they
organized?

PARTICIPANT: [00:02:06] so I like reading books or watching TV series, also listening to

programs to radio programs programs when I have free time.

INTERVIEWER: [00:02:23] Right. So the next question is more about your learning behavior
when you're studying English Okay, so we're going to focus for now when you're in the
classroom, so I want to know how do you prepare for any English learning activity in the
classroom?
PARTICIPANT: [00:02:46] So I. I watched Judieth. So... once the activities we did the last
lesson and so I get prepared to the next lesson.

INTERVIEWER: [00:03:08] So you do some. Somehow you review what you did and that's the
way you prepared

PARTICIPANT: [00:03:17] (incoherent gibberish) the last lesson.

INTERVIEWER: [00:03:19] Okay, and when you're in the classroom and the teacher give you
an activity. What's the first thing you do?

PARTICIPANT: [00:03:30] Reading the text for example listening to the to the audio tech to
the audio file. It's related to the ability. I am requested to exercise.

INTERVIEWER: [00:03:49] Okay, thank you. Now we're going to move to the part when you
are doing the activity. So I want to know how do you monitor your performance while doing
a specific English activity?

PARTICIPANT: [00:04:07] In what sense? I can't understand?

INTERVIEWER: [00:04:10] Okay, don't worry. I'm so while you're doing the activity. What
kind of strategies do you do to make sure you're doing it right or you're following the
instructions of the task?

PARTICIPANT: [00:04:29] I can't answer to this question. So it depends on the single activity.

Okay. Yeah, let's say one activity. For example, as you said one of the reading or listening
that you mentioned in before. So what do you do? When you have to read a text you said
that you read the questions you read the text. So what do you do during that reading?

INTERVIEWER: [00:04:56] So I first came to text and then i try to read it more precisely
andand then I try to answer the questions and if I do the exercise, well, if I understood the
meaning of the text

and you mentioned again the listening activity, so in this case, what do you do when you're
listening to an audio file in English?

PARTICIPANT: [00:05:33] I try to concentrate on the listening activity because for an Italian
student it is the more difficult activity the most difficult story activity because you don't have
a text to read but you have to concentrate to pronounciations intonation that is different
from each other and one,

INTERVIEWER: [00:05:59] okay. Thank you. now we talked about what you do before the
activities. How do you prepare we you just mentioned what you do while doing the activity.
So now I want to know how do you evaluate your own performance after completing any of
those activities? It could be reading listening or speaking the one you would like to talk.

PARTICIPANT: [00:06:29] we evaluate single activities in class. So I want to evaluate by my

stage by myself. (impossible to understand )
INTERVIEWER: [00:06:39] And as you said that that happens in the classroom, so I want to
know in what ways if any do you evaluate differently when you are outside the classroom or
when you're at home.

PARTICIPANT: [00:07:02] in this period I have not too much time to evaluate myself. So I
mostly do activities when I'm in class with other students and I. Talk to each other and we do
things together.

INTERVIEWER: [00:07:27] You mentioned your classmates. What about the teacher? Do you
also wait for his or her approval when you complete the activity?

PARTICIPANT: [00:07:37] Obviously.

INTERVIEWER: [00:07:39] Yeah, alright. Okay. Thank you. There's I'm going to read this
question for you. And please let me know if you understand. Otherwise, I can work out to
see it in a different way. What behaviors do you engage in which tells you that you are taking
responsibility for your own learning.

PARTICIPANT: [00:08:07] So could you repeat please?

INTERVIEWER: [00:08:09] Yeah. Sure. So what behaviors what do you do? What kind of
activities or actions you do that tells you? Okay right. Now when I do this or I do that I'm
taking responsibility for my own learning.

PARTICIPANT: [00:08:31] .So you mean that how I feel when someone tells me I am getting
responsibility for my own English, my English studying.

INTERVIEWER: [00:08:51] Yeah, I mean not necessarily When someone tells you that but
maybe when you actually do it and says, okay, when I do this, I'm taking control II feel
responsible for what I'm doing.

PARTICIPANT: [00:09:04] Okay, so I would like to be more responsible now about my English
about my English ability or my ability in English, but I have not so much time with for work.
So I'd like to be more responsible.

I would like to study English better. So I try to do it as well as I can in this videos.

INTERVIEWER: [00:09:43] You mentioned at the beginning that when you're at home you
like to watch some movies read books in English. I wonder if when you do that

when you do that, do you think like somehow you're helping yourself to to learn better and
improve your learning or it's more like you do it just for fun.

PARTICIPANT: [00:10:11] i think for improving my knowledge of English and for having fun
because I like tv series.

INTERVIEWER: [00:10:19] Both right. I'm going to ask you now you're understanding for a
specific concept. There is no right or wrong answer. I just want your opinion. So what do you
think? How do you understand the term self-regulated learning? What do you understand
by that?
PARTICIPANT: [00:10:41] learning i make by myself. So I decide how many hours to dedicate
to this learning, which activities to do, which abilities to improve Etc.

INTERVIEWER: [00:11:00] Okay. Do you think you do that when you're doing this course
right now in the English, with English course with Anna.

PARTICIPANT: [00:11:10] I hope of being able in the future to do that in the future.

INTERVIEWER: [00:11:17] Okay, thank you. We're moving now to the end of the interview as
I promised very short interview. I want to know why are you taking the English course with
Anna?

PARTICIPANT: [00:11:30] Sorry, you would like to know why I am doing course.

INTERVIEWER: [00:11:35] Yes. Why are you taking that course?

PARTICIPANT: [00:11:39] So I would like to improve my academic and Professional

Knowledge of English and also to consolidate my knowledge because as I said, it was
Scholastic knowledge of English, so.

I would like to travel to English for example, but in this period I can't so I think the best way
to improve my English knowledge is to take part to a course with an English teacher.

INTERVIEWER: [00:12:20] English native Miss speaker of English. You mentioned that you're
taking it also for your develop your English in your profession. How do you think oh what
possible contributions of this course would have to your current profession as a lawyer.

PARTICIPANT: [00:12:40] So I chose I've chosen a mood that regards logical and critical
thinking and I'm also interested in another one that is about psychology of Criminal Justice.
So as a lawyer, These courses can interest me. So I would like to improve my English, my
professional English because this course is related to matters to issues that can interest me.

INTERVIEWER: [00:13:20] Thank you. You mentioned moocs. You mentioned that you're
doing a mooc. Have you completed a free online course before?

PARTICIPANT: [00:13:29] No, I

INTERVIEWER: [00:13:30] don't.

Okay. So this will be your first time by doing one of them. Okay, thank you. So since you have
never worked with one of them, I do want to know what do you think or what do you
consider the key characteristics of free online courses are.

PARTICIPANT: [00:13:55] So I've never stopped. Sorry. I have not started it yet, but I
watched the page of the course the introduction page. I have seen that there is the
presentation of the course and it could be it can be useful to develop different abilities. For
example, listening, Reading, Writing. So it is useful for my Scopes and so. For this reason, I'm
glad to do this courses.
INTERVIEWER: [00:14:50] Okay. Thank you very much. We are now moving to the last
question of the interview and I want to know what do you think actually do you think that by
doing a mooc or a free online course can influence the way people learn English?

PARTICIPANT: [00:15:14] People could be able to develop by its own, its knowledge of
English, so. Italian people is not so good at throwing speaking English because we are at.
How can I say we speak Italian and not much other languages so. it's our holes in language
because we think that we can only speak Italian and that's all over the world. We could be
understood by other people. It's wrong. I think that learning English, but also other
languages by mooc system people able to develop his knowledge of languages by itself and
also relating to issues that interest every person, for example, I'm a lawyer. I'm interested in
law, other students in my course are Architects so they are interested in architecture issues
and such etc. So we develop its own language, its own professional language.

INTERVIEWER: [00:16:53] So that could be useful for them if they want to develop that
Professional Knowledge and in the language.

PARTICIPANT: [00:17:00] no, other people, First have chosen a course of English grammar.
So moocs could be useful also to develop English grammar. It could be for basis, especially
for Italian people that is a little bit deficient in grammar.

INTERVIEWER: [00:17:23] Okay. So as you said it's not just about professional content, but
also linguistic aspects of english. Okay, like grammar or vocabulary or listen etc. Right? We
have reached the end of the interview. So if you have any questions or any comments, feel
free to add. Otherwise, I'll be telling you that we are in the week in which I will send you the
first survey of the of the mooc is a very short survey or questionnaire is only five six
questions. And one of them for example is to tell me what is the name of the mooc that
you're doing and how long you're working with it. Of course. I just expect honest answers.
I'm not going to judge you I suggest two hours minimum, but if you think you can do more
you are free to do more if you think no I'm too busy. You can do less. It's up to you. Okay, so
any question you have?

PARTICIPANT: [00:18:22] No, I haven't said

INTERVIEWER: [00:18:24] Thank you.

PARTICIPANT: [00:18:24] And I am sorry for my english and i thank you for as you gave me.

INTERVIEWER: [00:18:33] I'll see you at hopefully I'm planning to go again in May. So
hopefully we'll see each other in one of the one of the lessons week 9 or week 10, okay. You
know that at the end of the course we're going to do five surveys in total, right and then one
last interview just to share what you did with the course on itself and I are you okay with it?

PARTICIPANT: [00:19:05] okay.
