KII for one pupil of P3 and one pupil of p.4 in Mihimiro Primary School, reason being

intervention this year happened in P.1 and P.2 and it happened last year on P.3 and P4 , so that

why we interchanged the pairs as per the training because we feel we get more information

from those currently having the intervention compared with those who had the intervention

last year

Interviewer: So, Kennedy and Melan thank you for accepting to talk with me, I know the

teacher didn’t teach you this year, not so?

M001. Yes

Interviewer: But she taught you last year. Last year, for how many terms did madam teach

you?

M001: For two terms.

Interviewer: Which one and which one?

M001: Term two and term three.

Interviewer: Let me start with Melan who was P.2 at that time, for how long did madam teach

you?

M001: (inaudible)

Interviewer: I beg your pardon?

M001: Term two and term three.

Interviewer: Term two and three. OK Let me start with Melan who was P.2 at that time. When

madam was teaching you at that time, did you attend all the lessons? Did you attend all her

lessons or are their times when you missed her lessons?


001: I attended all the lessons. I never missed.

Interviewer: Thank you. What about you Kennedy. Did you attend all the lessons?

K002: No

Interviewer: Like how many times did you miss?

K002: Like two.

Interviewer: Why were you absent?

K002: I was sick.

Interviewer: Did you get better or are you still sick?

K002: Yes, I got better only that now am I having cough.

Interviewer: Cough? Are you taking any medicine?

K002: No, am not.

Interviewer: When you get home take some medicine so that you get better. Ok?

K002: I will.

Interviewer: When madam was teaching you, Kennedy tell me, what was she teaching you?

What were you doing in class?

K002: Sounds.

Interviewer: Sounds. OK. Anything else?

K002: In those sounds we would make out words.

Interviewer: Thank you. Is there anything else that she would teach you? Anything else you

can remember?
K002: No.

Interviewer: Ok. Thank you so much. What about you Melani?

M001: She used to teach us sounds.

Interviewer: What did she teach you?

M001Sounds.

Interviewer: Anything else?

M001: we would segment them and form words.

Interviewer: Anything else?

M001: We would make sentences after segmenting.

Interviewer: Anything else?

M001: No.

Interviewer: OK. Thank you so much. Now everything that you used to study, the sounds,

segmenting and the rest, did this help in any way in your learning?

K002: Yes

Interviewer: How did it help you?

K002: Learning.

Interviewer: It helped you to learn. How exactly did it help you in learning?

K001: It helped me in reading Runyoro.(inaudible)

Respondent: from morning hours to evening like from 10am to 1pm

Interviewer Does the teacher teach you every day

Respondent: No, like madam teaches today and other teaches another day

Interviewer: does the teacher teach every week?

Respondent: In a week she teaches like three days

Interviewer So, what time does they teach you

Respondent: We start at 7am to break time

Interviewer: Does the same teacher teaches but not the class teacher

Respondent: Yes

Interviewer: So, she teached the all class or she teaches in shifts

Respondent: yes, the all class

Interviewer: So, she does not tell may let the 20 pupils first study and the others leave

Respondent: no, she teaches us all at once

Interviewer: so if she comes , how do you sit

Respondent We sit amd puts the chats in class having sounds

Respondent: yes, they tell us to be hard working and put more energy

Respondent: nothing we don’t want

Interviewer: is there any pupil when the teacher enters and they go out

Respondent: no

Interviewer: you said parents told you to put more energy, do they tell you that they teach you

subjects and pupils normally get out, what do you tell them about it

Respondent: they tell us to put more energy

Interviewer: is there any teacher who comes and teach you after lunch and how may times

Respondent: many times

Respondent: she gave us work to make sentences
