MSHS JV SOFTBALL

Team meeting 2019

**Remember to take breaks**
1. Some sort of mental team building exercise……
 We do A LOT of drills, but we have to mentally know the game.
2. Individual team notebooks. Hand out and explain how to use them.
3. Lay out my priorities:
 1. God/Religion. If you do or don’t have it is a personal choice.
 2. Family. Family, in whatever form is a forever thing. Cherish them.
 3. School. Work hard at it!! Doing your best at it is what will separate you
from many others.
 4. Softball. Make a conscious decision to everyday that you want to get
better at softball. It is both a mental and physical decision. DEDICATE!
 5. Other. Friends, Games, TV, etc…
 6. When you are here it is about softball. When you are at school it is about
school. When you are home it’s about family. Focus in the here and now, it
helps the bigger things fall into place.

4. What I’m asking from you. In reality I am asking for a very little amount of
your time and attention.
 The average woman lives to the age of 81. So, …
 That is 709,560 hours that you are alive.
 Rounding up, … With 30 games @ 1.5 hours a piece and 50 practices at 1.5
hours a piece that equals 120 hours for a season.
 I’m looking for 1.369% of your year or .0169% of your life. That isn’t asking
too much!! Please stay focused when it is needed.
 The average male only lives to 76 years old. So, I am giving up a larger
percentage of my life to be here. Haha.
 BE ON TIME FOR EVERYTHING!!! If practice is at 6:30 be there at 6:20.
 HUSTLE AT ALL TIMES!!!

5. EVERYONE contributes in a team sport. Softball is a TEAM sport.

 From the fastest runner to the slowest runner. From the best/loudest
cheerleader to the best hitter. Everyone brings something to this TEAM!!
 No, we will not be doing stickers on the helmets. You are expected to be
doing your best all the time and making the great plays. If you make a great
play chances are very good someone, or something that happened, on this
team helped you to make that play. I will however start this year a few end of
season awards. Best batting average, most steals, unsung hero, etc….

6. Your safety is the most important thing.

 If you have a request for a piece of safety equipment please bring it to my
attention. Facemask, shin guard, etc.
 Wear your protective equipment all the time, even during practice.
 Ice down as often as possible.
 Concussions……… Cover! Important!

7. Facebook page: MSHS Redette Softball or Twitter: @redettesoftball

 We have a Facebook page where we can get information out to you the
players and your parents. If your parents are on Facebook please make them
aware of the page so they can get on there.

8. You will fail. You will have set backs.

 What will determine your success is how you deal with those failures. You
must accept them, learn from them and move on.
 The best hitters in the world only bat .350-.400. That means they only get on
base 4 out of 10 times. They fail 6 out of 10 times!! They learn and become
better.
 Failure really is an ugly word. Grade: F = Failure. What is a A = ?
 You are given permission to Fail.

9. Understand what you do and don’t control.

 You can only control you. Your breathing, your attitude and your reaction.
 They say life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it.
 You can’t control the umps calls, what they will pitch you, fans, etc.
 Winning a game is probably one thing that is the most out of your control.
You can’t control a bad call, the weather, a bad bounce or luck. BUT if you
control you and do the things you can do to the best of your abilities then the
winning will follow.

10. Pre and Post game routines

 We are a TEAM so we will arrive together for away games and the dome.
 We will have a set routine we go through before each game. It will be laid out
and practiced before we play our first game.
 Our post game routine will include a salute or cheer to thank the fans. Start to
think of one or how you would like to do it.

11. We are always alert and looking for the next base or stopping the runners.
 One of my FAVORITE rules is that the ball isn’t dead until it is back in the
pitching circle!! If you look and watch you would be amazed at how many
girls quit playing once the play has “ended”. The ball is live!!
 We take advantage of everything on the field. If they are going to give us
extra bases, we will take them!!
 I will, from time to time, have different rules for you to learn and review. I
believe not only should you play this game but you should be aware of the
rules.
12. Try to attend the Varsity games.
 It isn’t required but if you can get to the Varsity games, I recommend that you
get out supporting the Varsity when they are playing.
 Varsity at the Dome: Friday April 12th and Saturday April 13th.
 Watch college softball on TV.

13. Review wrist band and sign system.

14. You must have spikes to play. Tennis shoes for the dome.
15. On piece of paper.
 Name, E-mail, cell or home #, preferred way to contact you, address,
birthdate.
 1 personal and 1 team goal.

16. Contacting a coach.

 If you ever need help with a problem, someone to talk to or if something
comes up last minute before a practice or game don’t hesitate to contact a
coach.
 Coach Kyle: Kyle.A.Johnson9972@gmail.com
 Coach Crystal:
 Coach Brianna: briannarjohnson5@gmail.com

17. Team captains.

 We will be selecting 2 team captains after the dome tournament. The team as
a whole will vote on who they want as captains and also the coaches will have
a say in who is selected.
 They will obviously be leaders for the team but they will also act as a go
between the coaches and the players. If there is a player that has a problem
and feels they can’t approach the coach they can talk to a captain and they can
talk to the coach.
 With that, I encourage you to come and talk to me if you do have a problem.

18. Team activities

 You should make it a priority to attend any team activities we have.
 Sugarloaf hike: May 11th (meet at 11. Some rides available)
 In the team room for movie night: April 20th @ 6
 Superior Lanes for bowling. March 23rd @ 6
 Team Pajama practice
 Team Super Hero T-shirt practice: Every Friday practice.
 Team dinner
