U4 L1: Pythagorean Theorem and SOHCAHTOA MCR3

THEORY

 Pythagorean theorem is used to find the missing side in a right angled triangle
 SOHCAHTOA gives relationships between sides and angles in right angled triangles
 The hypotenuse is the longest side, always opposite the 90 angle

Pythagorean Theorem

a 2+b 2=h2 h

e.g. Find the missing side of a right triangle with hypoteneuse of 7cm and one side measuring 4
cm.

SOHCAHTOA

SOHCAHTOA gives 3 formulae:

Note that Opp is written to avoid confusing O with 0 (zero)

You must decide which of the 3 equation to use based on the quantities you are given.

e.g. 1 to find an angle: e.g. 2 to find a side

Practice:

1. In triangle ABC, B = 90, A = 18.6 and b = 11.3cm. Solve the triangle (i.e. find all sides and
angles) to the nearest tenth.

2. In triangle DEF, E = 90, d = 7.4m and f = 6.5m. Solve the triangle to the nearest tenth.

3. John is standing x metres away from an 86m tall building. From where he is standing, the angle
of elevation to the top of the building is 65. Find the distance from John to the building, as
measured along the ground.

4. Joe wants to climb a tree. He is standing between two trees, A and B. The angle of elevation
from his feet to tree B is 65. The angle of elevation to tree A is 47. He estimates that he is 30m
from tree A, and 45m from tree B. If he wants to climb the taller tree, which one should he
climb?

5. Solve the following triangle for the unknown quantities:
