II. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

We all know that doing warm ups is important as part of a daily routine for instrumental
music students. Individual and group warm ups can serve multiple functions that include
physical, mental, and technical preparation for rehearsal. The time allotted before, and at the
beginning of the rehearsal, should be viewed as invested time, not time wasted. Students and
teachers can save hours of practice and rehearsal time by creating carefully planned warm-up
activities.

The chromatic scale or twelve-tone scale is a musical scale with twelve pitches each

a semitone above or below its adjacent pitches. As a result, in 12-tone equal temperament (the
most common temperament in Western music), the chromatic scale covers all 12 of the
available pitches. Thus, there is only one chromatic scale.

C major (or the key of C) is a major scale based on C, with the pitches C, D, E, F, G, A,

and B. C major is one of the most common key signatures used in western music. Its key
signature has no flats and no sharps.
