Brake System
Brake pump (20) draws oil from hydraulic tank (19) for the brake system. The brake pump is a
variable displacement piston pump. The pressure compensator valve senses the load requirements of
the brake system. The pressure compensator valve maintains the oil pressure to the brake system by
either upstroking or destroking the brake pump.

Next, the oil will flow through check valves (15, 21, 22) and then to brake accumulator (16) and
accumulator (17) . The pressure oil from the brake pump maintains the oil pressure in the brake
accumulators. When, the pressure of the oil in the brake accumulators equals 16000 ± 345 kPa
(2320 ± 50 psi) the pressure compensator valve destrokes the brake pump. Check valves (21) and
check valve (22) prevents the flow of pressure oil from accumulator (17) to the accumulator (16)
circuit in the case of a hose failure or loss of fluid in the accumulator (16) circuit. This action works
opposite for accumulator (16) .

The oil flows from the accumulators to the brake manifold (12) . The oil then flows to pressure
switch (10) and pressure switch (11) . Pressure switch (10) monitors the pressure of the oil from the
front brake accumulators. Pressure switch (11) monitors the pressure of the oil from the rear brake
accumulators. The Vital Information Management System VIMS monitors pressure switches (10)
and (11) . The Vital Information Management System VIMS will display a warning if the pressure
is lower than 6890 ± 345 kPa (1000 ± 50 psi). The Brake manifold (12) routes the oil to service

brake control valve (8) . When either brake pedal (6, 7) is depressed, the pressure oil flows through
service brake control valve (8) . When service brake control valve (8) actuates, pressure oil flows to
front service brakes (1) and to rear service brakes (18) .

However, depressing the left brake pedal first limits the amount of power that is available through
the drive train by limiting the amount of impeller clutch pressure. This action provides more engine
power for the rest of the hydraulic system. Depressing the left pedal assembly even farther actuates
the service brakes at each wheel.

When the left pedal is released, the service brake valve and the impeller clutch deactivate. This
action allows the service brakes to release.

Pressure oil also flows to parking brake control valve (9) . When the parking brake control valve is
in the ENGAGED position, the flow of oil to parking brake (2) is blocked and any pressure oil in
the parking brake is released to tank (19) . This action causes the parking brake to remain engaged.
When the parking brake valve is in the DISENGAGED position, pressure oil flows to pressure
switch (5) and parking brake (2) . This action causes the parking brake to release.

The ECM for the power train monitors pressure switch (5) . When the pressure is lower than 6890 ±
345 kPa (1000 ± 50 psi), the VIMS will display a warning. This warning indicates that the parking
brake is engaged.

Cooling Circuit for the Steering and Brake Systems

Gear pump (30) draws hydraulic oil from hydraulic tank (19) . The oil then passes through filter
(28) . The filter removes any debris that is in the hydraulic oil. This action prevents contamination
of the oil that is in the hydraulic tank for the steering and brake systems.

A bypass valve in the filter allows the hydraulic oil to bypass the oil filter. This action occurs when
the flow of oil through the filter is restricted and an adequate oil flow cannot be maintained. This
action also occurs in cold start-up conditions when the hydraulic oil is cold and when the filter is
clogged with debris. Pressure switch (29) actuates when the flow of oil through the filter is
restricted. Pressure switch (29) is monitored by the VIMS. The VIMS will display a warning when
the flow of oil through the filter is restricted.

The hydraulic oil then flows to oil cooler (23) for the steering and brake systems. Check valve (24)
for the oil cooler bypass allows the hydraulic oil to bypass the oil cooler. This action occurs when
the hydraulic oil is cold. The hydraulic oil then flows to hydraulic tank (19) for the steering and
brake systems.

Fluid sampling valve (27) is available for scheduled oil sampling analysis (S·O·S analysis). The
fluid sampling valve is mounted to gear pump (30) for the cooling circuit.

Cooling Circuit for the Brakes

Brake cooling pump (33) circulates the oil through the oil cooler (32) . When the engine is started
and the oil is cold, the oil from brake cooling pump (33) cannot easily flow through oil cooler (32) .
The oil pressure will increase in oil cooler (32) and the check valve (31) will open. Check valve
(31) limits the maximum oil pressure in the oil cooler (32) to 345 ± 45 kPa (50 ± 6 psi). When the
temperature of the oil increases, the pressure of the oil decreases. When the spring force is greater
than the force of the oil pressure, check valve (31) will close. The oil flows through the oil cooler
(32) . From the oil cooler (32) , oil circulates through screen group (26) and check valves (25) and
through the front brake housings (1) and the rear brake housings (18) .

Hydraulic oil temperature sensor (3) for the front service brakes is located on the front axle housing.
Hydraulic oil temperature sensor (14) for the rear service brakes is located on the rear axle housing.

The hydraulic oil temperature sensors activate a warning in the cab when the temperature of the oil
reaches approximately 90°C (194°F). When the temperature of the oil cools to approximately 85°C
(185°F), the warning stops.

Balance line (35) diverts oil back to the steering/brake tank (19) if oil from the brake circuit crosses
into the brake cooling tank (34) . This action ensures that the brake cooling tank (34) does not over
fill and reduces the oil volume in the steering/brake tank (19) .

Information Management System (VIMS)".
